items in Brief, 6
“We are indebted to Messrs. Spencer &
-deal with.—A very large numberof new
sidewalks are being laid down, . particularly at some places where the old walks
wereentirely gone in. Heretofore it was not
safe to walk ten steps before looking ahead
at ‘tother end.——W. H. Davidson, the
assessing the property within the city limits in about two weeks._——Freight brought
from Colfax to this, city is now down toa
very reasonable rate—only 87% cents per
hundred pounds. if it was down any
lower teamsters would draw off in double
quick, we think.—The Jewish holidays
closed last evening; now ali who are in
want of cigars, dry~goods and clothing,
can have a chance‘to let go some of their
loose change, ——Quail hunters are out in
the woods évery day, but somehow or other
they don’t bring much of the aforesaid
gathe, in with them. We believe good
they would only open a few stands for
the sale of game on the various trails leading to this city, a8 you know it’s not very
pléusant to spénd a whole day in search of
it without bringing any to town.———The
Cosmopolitan Benevolent Society are selling tickets very rapidly now. Orders are
daily received for tickets from all parts of
the Universe. One-half of the letters that . .
arrive at the Post Office now-a-days, are
gold pieces are scarce; so we heard a fellow say yesterday who had not done a day’s
work in 19 years._——‘‘You go school, bully!
~ bully !"——The Colfax stages for the past
few days, have been crowded with passento reach this city, necessarily come through
Grass Valley, and gives that town a very
lively appearance for a shor time, much to
_to the gratification of the inhabitants. It
would scare the people there haif to
death or else. raise property one hundred
per cent., if all the stages that arrive and
depart from this town were to pass through
that beautiful place.——In about ten days
the Orleans Company will have their hoistworks in working erder, ‘and then we shall
expect to see some fine looking rock pulled
out of mother earth._—_W. H. Crawford
has been appointed agent for a patent
‘safety lamp, we have forgotten-the names
of the inventors, but one thing we do
know, that they are the best lamps of the
kind that we have ever seen. They can be
had at the hardware store opposite Wells, :
Fargo & Co.—Business yesterday was decidedly dull. Our Jewish friends had
their stores closed, and the town presented
the appearance of some one having ‘‘kicked
the bucket.”——-Gold in big chunks continue to be found in the streets leading to
Gold Flat; in other words, in the vicinity of the place where we stated last week
there were as good leads asever was struck
on the ridge where the Pittsburg mine is
situated._—Two hunters left this city a
few days ago, and returned before sunrise
yesterday morning, bringing a dead squab
with them. It’s rather rough on the hunters.—-The District Court will meet today, the Lord willing.——Teams loaded
with machinery for a new mill, to be erected somewhere-on the ridge, passed through
this city yesterday, It came from the Nevada Foundry, as a matter of course.
Talking about foundries, there is not a
better one on the coast than that owned by
‘David Thom, on Spring street. Work is
tarned out equal to any and as cheap as the
same kind can be donein the State.——It
is rumored thata 6% cent whisky shop
will soon’ be opened in this city. We presume an ordinance will be passed compell-.
ing the fellow to locate his ‘‘dead-fall” on
the outside of the corporation ; near the
graveyard, we would respectfully suggest.
——The Hidden Gravel Mining Company,
located on Alta Hill, Grass Valley, has
been incorporated. Capital stock, $300,080, divided inte 3,000 shares of $100 each.
The Trustees for the first three months are
H. H. Blake, H. J. Payne, W. A. Bateman»
3. 8. Curtis, and David Wilder.——The
case of Lotta Morton comes up before JusPlainant in this case, and defendant in two
or three cases to be tried before Justice
Palmer.—The ball to be given by the
members of the Brooklyn Lodge, 1. 0. 0.
F., at You Bet, on Thursday evening, Oct,
6th, promises to be a grand affair. A general invitation has been extended to everybody, so we have been requested to state.
Within the past week, D. R. Ammon is
to be'as plentifal here as in any State in
the Union, With all the advantages in the
world for raising chickens and turkeys,
nobody sedms to care about engaging in
the business very extensively. Wheat is
shipped from this State East to feed hens
. and in return thousands of dozens of eggs.
are sent to this coast. Splendid arrangement !——One or two hundred Chinamen, .
who have been working in the upper part
of the county, passed through this city
yesterday, bound for the lower régions.—.
A load of hay and a load of wood arrived
at Grass Valley afew days ago, whereat
the natives rejoiced ati the revival of business.

A Chapter of Facts.
Space ia valnable ina newspaper, and _it-is.Jtherefore proposed in this advertisement to
condense a variety of facts, important to the
public, iuto'a small compass. Those facts refer to Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters—what that
celebrated medicine is, and what it will do.
In the first place then, the article-is-a—etimu}lant, tonic and alterative, consisting ofa combination of an absolutely pure spirituous

physician. These ingredients are compounded with great care, and in such proportions as
to produce a preparation which invigorates
