NEVADA CITY, CAL. ,
LOCAL AFFAIRS.
Local Brevities.
Wm. Barton has got well at work
‘in his new shop on Broad Street.
From present appearances 1t seems .
there will be no.evidence adduced in
the case of the peeple versus Annie
Reed, that will besufficieat to con-'
vict her. :
John Shaw is lying dangerously ill
with typhoid fever. The past day
or two he recognized no one. That
here and elsewhere. At Truckee
there are six or eight persons siek
with it. ae an
Hon. Wm. Watt favored this office
» witha call yesterday. He: did not
ome asa politician, nor did he try
to convert us to his religious faith.
It was only a friendly call, that was
all,
The Manzanita mine continues.to
send out the richest kind: of gravel,
and the indications are that the
same kind of ground extends
indefinitely. A large foreé of men
are engaged in drifting, and more are . .
put on as room for them to work is
made. Afew nore mines Jike the
Munzanita, is what this place needs.
The funeral of the late Walter
Edwards, took place from the Methodist Church in this city yesterday.
The remains were brought fro
here, where he was born and brought
up, and where his family still reside. He was a young man of
promise, and ;was greatly esteemed
‘by all who knewhim. His relatives
have the sympathy of the entire
community. adi
House Robbery.
The rooms of R:C. Walzath, which
are in the second story of the house
on Piety Hill, owned by Mr. Hunter,
"were entered on Saturday night last,
while all the family were absent, and
'° @ trunk and other articles were taken
therefrom, In the trunk were busi~~ ness papers, besides perhaps a hun‘dred or more dollars worth of specimens, and other things of value.
The room was reached by a ladder
which was placed against the house.
On Sunday ‘the trunk was found
‘beside the fence, inthe yard of a
neighbor, where the robber had left
it. Who performed the eperation is
yet unknowrm. It would be well for
owners of houses in town to be on
the look out, and when another
covey appears at a. window to give
him a dose of buck shot slap in the
face.
'V Flame Lumber Yard.
It is a busy place at the yard of
the V Flume Lumber Company, on
Town Talk Hill, The company are
farnishing ten thousand ties, and all
the timbers used in the construction
of tke bridges and tunnels on the
time from here to Grass Valley.
Some of the timbers furnished are
‘thirty-six feet feet long. They were
floated down the flume with perfect
ease. Lumber of every hind is accumulating at the yard, and all orders can be filled with dispatch.
Sacramento Street.
We understand the City Trustees
' have determined to commence work
soon on Sacramento street, and have
it widened sufficiently to allow two
‘or three teams to pass at once. On
the west side a substantial walk will
be built for the accommodation ‘of
pedestrians toand from the depot.
We believe work is to be commenced
