A Fine.—Yesterday afternoon, about 3
o'clock, an alarm of fire was souhded and
a dense black swoke was seen rising above
the gas works. .A large quantity of pitch
pine stucked up back of the works had
been set on fire. The Hose Companies
were out prowptly and No.1 goon had a
streamon. The fire was extinguished in a
short time. In consequence of thé late
raing the wood burned slowly and the ‘firemen got the advantage of the fire. It is
supposed that the fire was started by children playing -as it is difficult to accuurt for
it upon any other ground.
Rich Lepce.—We learn that Ed. Hare

ishing order of the Fenian Brotherhood has
been established at Birchville. On last Sunday a special’ meeting was held at which
$144 was raised. Twentyssix members
were in attendance. With a full, lodge
the subscription would have been mucb
larger.

the service of Uncle Sam as engineer on
one of the gun boats of the Mississippi.
