Mr: Pattee and the local superintendent, “Horace’ Ferre, the most . . substantial hoistitig works in the ‘county have been erected. The whole establishhient: hasan appearance of, permanency ‘and strength which indicates that it is deThe works were started up for business yesterday morning, with the usual ceremonies. The building upon. the California mine is sixty-five by twenty four feet, with two stories. The lower floor is oceupied as ah engine room, and a placksmith shop. The steam is generated in two fine, forty-two inch, tubular boilers. The engine and.boilers were built. in Brooklyn, New York. ‘The engine is substantial and of sufficient power to run both’ hoisting works and mill. The cylinder i is 20 inchés in diameter, and the stroke is alsé 20 inches. ° The ‘engineer informs us that the engine can be run up to.150 horge power with ease. On the connecting-rod is painted the name of the mine—“California.” The engine room is furnished with taste and for convenience; The upper story of the building i is designed for the lending of the cars. The dump is so arranged that when the 10 stamp mill, which is already contracted for, is ‘completed, the quartz can bé landed ‘at the mouth of the battery. The inciine-isdown 160 feet-and . they expect to open on the ledge in a short time. Theground is decomposed granite and as they have no water they are’ efabled to sink very ‘Tapidly. ~The incline is composed of, three comipartments, each.of which is four fect'wide and five feet high.’ The middle division is . . supplied with a stairway and also the pump. In the others the cars are run np and down. The Company will use # ten’ inch plunger for a pump in the shaft,anda ~ five inch Excelsior pump for supplying the tank. Every part of the works are arrangéd for convenience, and ate of such a character.that they will not give out. Altogether the California works are the most subst stantial and complete.we have séen in the“county, The Eagté’ Company have also eight promising ledges at Devil’s Canon in the upper part of thiscounty. Mr. Pattee has already contracted for a five stamp mill with Booth &° Co. of San Francisco, which he expects to get in operation ‘by the iat of January, .te came ‘out; to. this State about the 1st of, June, and.by the Ist of January next he will have opened two claims in this county and started one Bet of hoisting works and two mills. Union Hux. —The population in. the on aecount, of the prosperity ,of the mines in thet locality. The people have erected & comfortable building for a ‘church’ and ‘school house, and are taking steps for the organization of a Pabli¢c School District. Revier Hr1i.—The gravel claims «in the. vicinity of Relief Hill are. yielding , largely this season, andthe little mining camp, once almost deserted, is beginning to look lively. One company on last Saturday, after a ron of one week, cleaned up over $3,000. Several other companies are at work and their labors are attended with €Xcellent success. Neamiy Reaby.—Marselus & Co. are ‘erecting; a fifteen stamp mill swpon: the Manzanita claims. The mill will, we anderstand, be ready. to start néxt week.
