_,hat.of the the old Roman Empire.
Victor Emanuel is p'edgvd not to interfere with the temporal power of the
Pope, and has shown that he has no
. digposition’ to do'so, and will not, if he
has his way during the lifetime of
“ Pids TX ; but ‘no agreement of their rulera can repress the just and laudable
_ aspirations of the Italian people, and
“gooner or later the Eternal City will be
made the Capital ofthe Kingdom. No
European Government is likely to interfere in the matter; and it simply re‘mains with Italy to’ say when her authorlte’ sball be peacefully extended
over the city.’ “The Pope, if he chooses,
can remain, for the Italians have no
wish 4o.expelyhim; and his religious
perees. and pastorals will be quite as
much respected-as thongh he retained
a terhporal power.

~of— beth armies,” The advices” from .
Paris represent that the French had
had the advantage, and that the left
. wing and ceaterof the Prossian army
was routed ;.but dispatches from the

»“uhatthePrassians have been successful
ii nearly. every eugagement. The
fighting; .extended for o distance of
ner thirty. miles, from Longuion to
Sedan, At the former place ‘the Pras‘latis ate reported to have taken refuge
/im-the neutral territory of Luxemburg,
