the God-appointed FRIDAY MORNING, SEPT. 20th,” fo R PRESIDENT, . ABRAHAM LINCOLN. ANDREW JOHNSON. © RLECTORS: : &; pana of ban F Dorado. Nowe 4 ¢ Hirst Distro DC. MoRven. ‘WM, McDONALD, of Columbls Hill, ‘Political Wotices. HON. Wy HIGBY, Union candidate for Congress, and HON. DAVID BELDEN will address the citizens of North Gan Juan on Saturday HON: JOSHPH KUTZ will address the October 11th. : inset fr eel ‘Tne War ts « Necesstry anv Must G0 ON.—One of the first principles among all living tind, animals ae Well os men, is "that of self-defense. Yt is seen in the tion, “Ge be Ties down in the mouth. of hiv den, and in the eagle, as. she screams in defiance at the approaching banter. Among Tadians and all wavage and hall civilized men, preservation is an intutitive and natural ine stinct. The same’ inevitable disposition of self defence goes beyond the jine of demarvation which separates ~intellect from: ins atingt;and we find mon, “made in the image of bis Maker,” persistent of his rights and Jealous thereof, just in proportion to hie intelligence, Indeed it is such a nateral and at the same time such a worthy attribute of man, thet mankind instinctively dispise . one of their own number who dors not stand upon bis individual.rights. The boy in the his companions. A surrender by individua or an army is only excusable on the ground of overpowering strength and absolute neips hoe are always badly received where vietory might bave been had 1 the mise is the next thing to a defeat. It isthe same with society at large, the eame with nations, Such being the fact, auch being theo ot which God has given all living kind, from the most brutal of beasts to the mest cultivated of men, men ia their colleotive capacity as a nation cannot be waging a0 Uuholy war, when that war is for selfpreservation and\in self-defence. No matter what may be the sacrifice, no matter how much the cost 1 Jife and treasure, it ie worth it all if it be necessarysto the maintenanée of the nation’s honor and in defense of. .inberited rights. Liberty is dearer to the Afnerican people than life, and a nation horn like ‘our own amid the struggles of a Revolution knows how te maintain and perpetuate its tange. How would the people of these United States have avoided this wart Why, even in the same way a parent could avoid having trowble with a re« ~belhous obild ; by giving up, by losing con. w8Peod letting the insubordinate have their own wey; As this would deatroy the parent's rightful authority and break up the * natuedlorder of things, eo. allowing secession would have-ruined the natiou’s ¢ontrot and established internal anarchy. As. the war could net have been avoided im the. beginning, neither can it be stupped till the end, and the end must be submission. If there must. be a sacrificed on the domestic altar, we cannot belp it. 11 States will ruinthemselves within their own borders, they do it from their free choice. while “the Union must and shall be preserved.” . If the “Ship of State” must outride the.etorm through seas of blood, we regret the necéasity but do not shrink frem the responsibility, nor fear the danger; ner withhold the sacrifice. It reb. ele will not submit, fight them into submission, If the seceded States will not come back of their own. will into the Union, bring them back at the cannon's mouth. “Puramount to everything else is the Union, Whatever stands in its way inust be sacrificed—State rights, slavery, everything .in any way detrimental therete. The war isa necessity and must go on, and no puny general Whe bas failed inv the feld, and no trearonloving party can trig the wheels of destiny w ate querying ué slowly, but. surely, wry to a purer mz, . bas been made against engineer Philips; Tue Wasnor Borers. —An i ion of the exploded boiler of the Washoe discloses the fact that the iron of wh they were made was rotten and defective — ‘Yhe Alta says the flues were perfect, and it was the shell or outer portion’ of the of it being torn away entirely arvund the: . boiler, as a standing tree is girdled by stripping away the bark for a givén distance in order to kill {t. The charge of manslaughter, with the concurrence of all the Cormmer’s Jury save one, he attributing the explosion to defective fron and workmatship. The ‘those know him to‘be one of fhe most caus tious and careful engineers in the State.— We have no doubt:that upon trial his innocence will be fully established. Lovis McLant’s Pusirion.—We are assured, says the Bulletin, on the best ate thority, that in each instance where the name of Louis McLane has been used in official connection with the McClellan party, it has been done without bis consent; andiin the last two, instances, where he appears as member of the McClellan and Pendleton Club, and ae Treasurer of the party organi~ tation, hie name has been used in direct opposition to his expreaged wish and positive refusal to take any part in their dehberations or management. TRE Balletin says the Pacific Mail Steamship Company's steamer Gulden Age will leave on the 3d of October, but her hour of sailing ia postponed to 3 Pr. M., to ae. commodate the Hebrew portion of the busi, Sess community, whose New Year occurs on the Ist of Octeber—the regular steamer day—wherefure they cannot transact any business on that day. THe San Francisco Board of Supervisors have authorized an increase of thirty-eight member to the Police force, to serve till November 15th. This increase of police ie wholly attributable te the mob demenstrations of the Copperheads, Trorrine Matcu.—At the Bay View Course, on the 98th inst., the tretting match for $1,000, mile heats, in. harness, three in five, between g.g. Humboldt, named by Ferguson, and black horse Latham, by Daniele, was won by Latham, Humboldt winning the first heat in 2:484. and Latham the three last heats in 2:454, 2:43) and 2:464. BULLION.—During the week ending Sun. day last, Wells, Fargo & Co. brought 6,209 peunds of bullion from Nevada Territory.— Of thie. 380 pounds were from Humboldt, 325 from Reese River, and the balance from Virginia. Total value, $152.59 95, ~ THe Mexicans throughout the State give unmistakable signs of unflinching loyalty to the Union and sympathy to the Government in ite contest with those who would destroy it. THE population of the loyal State is larger than when the war commenced. Foreign and Seuthern emigration keeps up the aggregate. Ow His Travets:—On-the Tth instant, Daniel Scott, the poor fellow who imagines himself to be Jeaus Christ, was at Denver city, having traveled on foot to that point from Oakland’in thie State, Tw Monitor, Alpine county, ice. fermed the thickness of a knife-blade, on the night of September 8th.
