G0 ON.—One of the first principles among
all living tind, animals ae Well os men, is
"that of self-defense. Yt is seen in the tion,

and in the eagle, as. she screams in
defiance at the approaching banter. Among
Tadians and all wavage and hall civilized men,
preservation is an intutitive and natural ine
stinct. The same’ inevitable disposition of
self defence goes beyond the jine of demarvation which separates ~intellect from: ins
atingt;and we find mon, “made in the image
of bis Maker,” persistent of his rights and

of overpowering strength and absolute neips hoe are always badly received

same with society at large, the eame with
nations, Such being the fact, auch being
theo ot which God has given all living
kind, from the most brutal of beasts to the
mest cultivated of men, men ia their colleotive capacity as a nation cannot be waging
a0 Uuholy war, when that war is for selfpreservation and\in self-defence. No matter what may be the sacrifice, no matter
how much the cost 1 Jife and treasure, it ie
worth it all if it be necessarysto the maintenanée of the nation’s honor and in defense
of. .inberited rights. Liberty is dearer to
the Afnerican people than life, and a nation
horn like ‘our own amid the struggles of a
Revolution knows how te maintain and perpetuate its tange. How would the
people of these United States have avoided
this wart Why, even in the same way a
parent could avoid having trowble with a re«
~belhous obild ; by giving up, by losing con.

own wey; As this would deatroy the parent's rightful authority and break up the

would have-ruined the natiou’s ¢ontrot and
established internal anarchy. As. the war
could net have been avoided im the. beginning, neither can it be stupped till the end,
and the end must be submission. If there
must. be a sacrificed on the domestic altar,
we cannot belp it. 11 States will ruinthemselves within their own borders, they do it
from their free choice. while “the Union must
and shall be preserved.” . If the “Ship of
State” must outride the.etorm through seas
of blood, we regret the necéasity but do not
shrink frem the responsibility, nor fear the
danger; ner withhold the sacrifice. It reb.
ele will not submit, fight them into submission, If the seceded States will not come
back of their own. will into the Union,
bring them back at the cannon's mouth.
“Puramount to everything else is the Union,
Whatever stands in its way inust be sacrificed—State rights, slavery, everything .in

Lovis McLant’s Pusirion.—We are

thority, that in each instance where the name
of Louis McLane has been used in official
connection with the McClellan party, it has
been done without bis consent; andiin the
last two, instances, where he appears as
