Local Brevities. Hon. George C. Gorham: arrived in this city on the morning train, and spoke here last night. Gorham is a welcome visitor in this county, The political stand on Broad street was tastily decorated with evergreens, flowers, and the stars and stripes, yesterday. . There has been another rich disovery of a ledge on Gaston Ridge. ' ¥¢ is four feet in width and . pays splendidly. The owners have bought } the material necessary fcr an drastra, end it has been shipped to the spot _and will be ready for work soon. Our sanctum was honored yester“day by a friendly cail from Hon. J. H. Neff, of Placer county, who is in attendance as a witness in the Trout Creek murder cases. The witnesses in the Trout Creek cases have to be in constant attendance upon the ‘District Court, yet are not allowed to be in the Court room while the other witnesses are testifying. They have found the grass plot in front ofthe Court House ‘a very pleasant place to, lounge on and we judged while glancing in upon them, that they pass their time quite pleasantly wnder the circumstances. -It is rather rough on a whole town to be compelled to absent themselves from home and business for amonth as witnesses, but sich isthe case with Truckee people this time. John’ Sweeney, of the Peoples Ice Co., San Francisco, is on a business visit to this section, and made us a call yesterday. John Moody, proprietbr-of the best paying-and best kept hotel in California, is a witness in the Trout Creek cases, and is sampling the vegetables grown here. ae We noticed our o'd friend Hamlet Davis, of Truckee, wending his way to the public school house yesterday afternoon. Mr. Davis was one of the earliest residents of this city, LS Most Elegant Stock of Goods at the Palace Dry Goods Store. Democratic -Meeting. Gen, John R. McConnell, one of the pioneers of this city, arrived bere yesterday afternoon, and will address the people on the political issues. of the day, in front of the National Exchange Hotel, this evening. Everybody should go and hear him. Glorious Rain. ‘Alively shower visited this seotion yesterday afternoon, which, for half an hour wonld have done credit tothe Web Foot country. Fruit Jars! 2,000 Fruit Jars, in store and for sale by W.A, Sigourney, 18 and 20 Commercial street, Nevada City, 85 Wuen MEn ane at Tuer Brst.— Dr. Beard states that from an analysis of the lives of a thousand representative men in all the great branches of the humen family, he made the between 40 and 50; the brazen between’20 and 30; theiron between 50 and 60, The superiority of youth and middle life over old age ih original work appears all the greater when we consider’the facf thut positions of honor .and prestige, professorships and publications are in the hand of the old. Reputation, like money and position, is mainly confined to the old. Men are not widely known until long after they have~done the work that gives them their fame, portraits of-great men are delusions; statutes are lies. They are taken which, on the average, is at least twenty-five years after they did the work which gave them their fame. Original work requires enthusiasm., If all the original work done by men under forty-five were annibil ted, they would reduced to barbarism.. Men are at their best at_that time when enthusiasm and experience are almost evenly balanced. This period, on the average, is from thirty-eight.to forty, After this the law is that experience increased, but enthusiam decreases. Where is no Excyse.
