THE San Francisco papers announce the death of ex-Vice President Hamlin, at New ,Orleans, on the 28th ult:, of yellow fever. No such news hag been received by overland dispatches, and the sad report is yet to be confirmed. A dispatch dated N apa, August 3ist, says: Two ladies, Mrs. Shallcross and Mre. Weehave been besten, not by the increase of Democratic votes, but because of the neglect and unconcern of loyal men. ee w > PREPARING For Tue Srate Far. The Directors of the State Agricultural Society having’ in charge the preparation of the Hall and east. wing’ for the teception of machinery, haye so far completed. their duty that, they are. ready ‘noW to receive all that may be sent, ‘and to sét it in motion.’ The east wing is 160 feet long by 42 feet wide. Throngh "thie; center, ‘for its entire length,,.runs.an avenue 12 feet wide Over this avenue, supported by. substantial framework, isa shaft that wilt be in continual motion. On ‘each side of this avenue is g space 18 feet wide by.160 long; where the articles will ibe stationed, making in the east wing a space of 5,760 feet devoted to the exhibition of machinery in motion. In the main hall there is another shaft and some 4,510 superficial feet of space devoted to machinery also, either in motion or not ; making a total of over 10> 000 feet. The motive power comes from two engines—one a 60-horse, and the other a 10-horse. The east wing is lighted by 56 jets of gas, and the main hall for the machinery not in motion and for farm proguce, by 88 ‘The preparations made are something like business. . Inventors can now display their improvements to the best possible advantage; for nothing could be more complete, so far as the Directors can make it, than the fa. cilities in the department of which. we speak. So says the Bee. TIME To LIVE. —One great affliction of Americans in this generation is that God did net put more. than sixty seconds in a minute; and that, in our haste to get a living we have not tithe to live. e have not time ‘to eat, to sleep, to wash, to read Shakspeare, to play with our children, to get passably acquainted with our wives, or articulate out moth. er tongue. If we could but add to the national time as easily as we. can tothe 2 a Semele, if we could ‘Dak dave nine days in. the, week, .or thirty-six hours in the day, ’ Attend to s hmatters? Bah! As the G b saith, “Who believes © Ox ceeds his majority, but there, is little ground to hope -for his. defeat.--If his majority be ‘not more than 5000, the Union ticket which had no third candidate against it. The process is simple and beautiful. The principal thing required is a good air pump. On the top of the air pump set a plate containing sulphuret, acid, place a small stool on the plate, and on the stool set a small tray with water in it. Over all place a.low glass cover, fitting air tight. The pump being worked the air is ‘drawn out, and with theremoval of the . pressure the water evaporates rapidly. ' Ie soon begins to boil, in consequence of the development of heat. Meanwhile the vapor, carrying the heat away with it, is absorbed by the sulphuric acid. Thus the water is actually frozen solid whilejt sgemsgo boil. og A — eeteeeced ARRIVALS AT THE NATIONAL EXCHANGE HOTEL. Broad Street, Nevada City, California. .
