LOCAL ITEMS.
Fires in the Woods. ia,
4 conflagration has been raging in
the woods; on the Washington ridge,
for. over two weeks. It commenced
neat the Cold Spring Canon, probably
by the carelessness of some camping
party, and on Saturday had extended
this side‘of the Six Mile House. Its
course was opposite the prevailing
winds, and consejuently made its way
slowly in this direction. For some
time it was confined_between the main
road and the north fork of Deer creek ;
buton Thursday last it had crossed
the creek, and the next day had crossed
to the north side of the road. It hasalready burned over a district seven or
eight miles square, and bids fair to
sweep the entire ridge. All the young
growth of.timber, is destroyed, as well
as n:any of the large trees. A person
standing in the neighborhood of the
fire, can hear. the fall of a large tree
every few minutes. No systematic effort has been made to extinguish the
conflagration, the few people on the
ridge contenting themselves with efforts to save their individual property.
The best trees for lumber, such as the
most readily.Supervisor Election.
The election for’ Supervisor of the
Third Distriet of this county—including the townships of Bridgeport,Bloomfield, and Eureka—takes place to-day?
Captain Henry Atwater, the Republi.
can nominee, isan old resident of Eureka township, where heis largely interested in mining. He has done much
tqward the development of the extensive mining interests at Moore’#*F lat,
isa man of sound judgment and busi~ ness “ha bits-and “where-he is-known is ‘
“noted for “his sterling integrity and
_ straight-forward dealings, Aside from
party considerations, he is the right
.man for the positior his friends have
selected him. We trust the Republicans of the district will come out toa
man and give him their united support. If a change in -politiés is occasionally advantageous, a division of the
political power is still more beneficial
to the public interest.
EZEucorporation.
The cértificate of incorporation of the
Orleans Consolidated Mining Company
was filed in the office of the County
Clerk yesterday. Tlie object of the
corporation is to carry on the business
of mining on, and extracting metals
from, the Orleans quartz ledge, situated on Gold Flat,in Nevada township snd county. The capital steck is
$210,000, divided into 2,100 shares of
$100 each ; principal place of business,

three months, T. W. Sigourney, A. B.
Brady, Oscar Maltman, Thomas Mein,
and C. P, Purinton. :

In the County Conft, yesterday,
James Cullovin, a native of Ireland, and
Julius Poquillon, August Lemair, and
Antoine Lacheze, natives of France,
were admitted to citizenship. As it is
somewhat doubtful just at this time
what kind of a Government France
may have, the last three, instead of
‘being required to renounce allegiance
to Napoleon III, were sworn to re
nounce allegiance to the ruling auDeparture,
Rev. Alex. Parker, for two years pas?
tor of the Congregational Church in
this city, preached his farewell sermon
on Sunday, and yesterday took his departure for the East, where he intends
wo. permanently reside. During his
residence here he has endeared himself
toa large circle of acquaintances, by
whom his absence will be missed.
Disturbing the Peace. .
William Williams was arrested by
Marshal Nihell, Sunday evening, on a
charge of drunkenness and disturbing
for the night. He was brought before
Justice Caldwell yesterday morning,
where he plead guilty and was fined
Persons from Nevada County who go to

The Life Sustaining Principle.
The vital and the muscular systems are en,
tirely distinct from each other. A man may
have the brawn of a Hercules, but if deficient
in vital energy he will not wear a8-well.or las;
as long, or be as healthy and happy while he
does last, as the.man of ordinary; or even
slender build, who possesses a larger share of
this animating principle. One of thé greatest
recommendations of that pure vegetable invigerant, Hostetfer’s Stomach Bitters, is that,
it increases the vital force.of the system. No
medicine can double the-volume of a man’s.
and sinews ; but Hostetter’s Bitters Has an
effeet much more important. Its use promotes constitutional vigor. It reinforces the
life-power, of which bone and sinew and muscle are merely the instruments, holding the
same relation to it that machinery does to
steam. Let the slight and apparently fragile
take heart, they may have more stamina, though far less physical strength; than the
broad shouldered athletes they rerard with
staminal principal which, when in full supply,
is the source of health and the best guaran.
tee of longevity, is a special. property of the
‘famous restorative. Itis not only a specific
for dyspepsia, biliousness,intermittent fevers,
constipation, etc., and a preventive of all dis.
eases of a malarious character, brt the best of
all medicines for strengthening the constitution and awakening the powers of nature from
whatever cause they may have become
lethargic.
