NEVADA CITY, CAL.
LOCAL AFFAIRS.
Meanness Double Distilled. _
We have a note before us which
reads. as follows:
Maxicious Liz.—Monday at the
half way house, Grass Valley road,
Aaron Hooper with his Satanic majesty A. B. Dibble in the Background,
stated to the passengers on John
Major’s stage going to Nevada, that
John Lancaster had received a teleaes saying that Booth would not
in Nevada that evening.
This note is signed by a very reSpectable gentleman of Grass Valley
who then was on his way to Nevada,
and heard Mr. Hooper make the
statement. Marshall Harris of Grass
Valley, was_also a passenger on the
stage and heard Mr. Hooper make
the remarks. On’ his arrival here
Marshall Harris inquired of Mr.
Lancaster as to the truth of the
statement and was informed that no
such dispatch was received, but, on
the contrary, a telegram had been
received saying that Booth and Eastman were on theik-say to Colfax and
to send a carriage for them.
Marshall Harris immediately telegraphed to Grass Valley the facts
and thus prevented the cops who
gave circulation to the lie from carrying into effect their helish scheme,
which was-to discourage the Republicans from coming here.
We understfind that a fellow holding some appointment under John
H. Dickson, also took pains in-givi
circulation to the devilish lie. as
We can hardly believe that Aaron
Hovper wilfully lied about this
matter, -or that he maliciously intended te deceive the people. We
have known him for many years and
kaye always believed him to be a
mtleman. We are inclined to believe that some infernal scoundrel of
this place told him what he repeated
and that he was deceived. Be it as
it mayit was about as mean an
act as we have ever known copperheads to be guilty of and in our
jong experience in life we have}
known them to be guilty of many
thousands of mean detestable acts,
It was meanness double distilled and
boiled down to a decoction 30 degrees below. truth.
As for the other fellow who gave
circulation to the lie, we have nothing to say. He was only doing the
bidding of his masters.
If Aaron Hooper does not explain
fo the Republicans of Grass Valley.
his position in this’ matter ‘every
Republican in that city should make
it a point to-day, to show him up as
&man unworthy the confidence of
the people.
>
A Word for the Ladies.
The decoration of the stand from
which Booth spoke on Munday night
was left to the Republican ladies of
Nevada, and well did they perform
the. work. Several American flags . .
were beautifully festooned around
and over the stand, anda large American banner was so arranged as to
float the stars and stripes to the
breeze. Immediately in front, a large
arch, wound with red, white and blue
stripes was sprung underneath the
canopy, and the columns in front
and at the sides were strung with
evergreens and rosettes made of flowers. In one of the rosettes a large
portrait of Abraham Lincoln was
placed, and in another that of Newton Booth. Immediately over the
canopy a portrait of Abraham Lincoln appeared, with a large banner
ever it, on which were the words
REMEMBER THE Martyr PREsmIDENT.
Encircling the arch in front in large
golden letters, were the words, THE
EVE or victory. Vases filled with
delightful flowers occupied the speaker’s desk. It was charmingly arranged and reflected great credit on
the ladies of this city who designed
and construcied the work.
: Senator. Lewis.
The Grass Valley Union copies an
article from the Placer-Heraid;-in”
which it is stated that E. J. Lewis
has nothing to resign, that he isn’t
Senator any longer. We always dislike to disagree with our friend of the
Union, but in this matter we are
compelled.to do so. E.J. Lewis is
now a Senator in the State Legislature and will remain‘ so unless he
. .dies or resigns, until the first Monday in December next. Should the
Governor call the Legislature together before this date, E. J. Lewis Democbatic candidate for Lieutenant
Governor would take his place in the
Senate. Does the Union sabee?
Dibble’s Speech Last Night.
A. B. Dibble was advertised to
speak here last night, and he gave
out beforehand that he intended to
call things by their right names, and
be exceedingly rough on the locum
tenens of the Transcrrpr. Of course
we have to anticipaté what ‘he will
say, for we cannot keep our columns
open to so late an hour as will enable
us to hear his speech and answer
him.
He will tell the people that every
chatge brought by us against Haight
isalie. He will tell them Haight
did not steal $3,700 of the people’s
money to pay for the flags; that he
did not build the Burnett monument,
nor sign eighteen subsidy bills, nor
sign the lottery bill, nor recommend
the repeal of the laws that prevents
Chinamen from voting; nor style the
Chinese ‘“‘our elder brethren;’’ nor
make a speech at the Burlingame
banquet. He will tell the people all
these charges’ made against Haigh;
are infernal lies, concocted out of
whole cloth by us. He will call us
all manner of bad names, and charge
us with the commission of every
crime in the decalogue. He will rail
and rant, throw his eyes toward
Heaven, raise himself on tiptoe, and
with outstretched hasds and hair
combed smoothly behind his ears,
call on God to witness that what
he is saying is the truth.
He will tell the people that he
never wasa Know Nothing candidate for Congress. That he never
belonged to the ‘‘North Star’’ asso‘ciation, and that he never dénounced
foreigners. He will say, all these
things are lies.
He will charge Newton Booth with
high crimes and misdemeanors. He
will pitch into Eastman and Sargent,
and throw slime and mud upon them.
He will give Gorham “phitz”’ and
tell more lies in his hour’s speech
than all the waters that cover the
vasty deep can ever wash out, und
he will by so doing sink himself so
deep in degredation and crime that
the hand of resurrection cannot save
him. als
But perhaps vur anticipations may
not be realized. Dibble may not do
any of these things. Well, all we
have to say about it, if he don’t do so,
is, that Dibble’s reformed wonderfully within the past few years; tnat
he ain’t the same A. B. Dibble he
was. only a few years ago.
