LOCAL INTELLIGENCE,
RicuSTRIKE aT PHELPs’ Hitt.—
Chas. Phelps, the original locator.of
Phelps’ Hill; near Washington, in this
county, made a rich strike about six
weeks ago. Mr. Phelps commenced
running a tunnel into the hill Hbout
three years ago and has worked in it
“more or less every season. The tunnel
has paid expenses ever since he commenced work, but about six weeks ago
he struck the main channel of gravel.
He does not know the width or depth
of the strata, but it is supposed to be
from ten to twelve feet deep and=one
hundred feet wide. The geld varies
from fine grains up to the size of a pea,
and he has found lumps worth $52.—
the lumps-were-as—targe as the kernels
of pea-nuts. As soon as the tunnel is
ran through, Mr. Phelps proposes to
put on hydraulic power and wash the
ground off. He has stuck by thie old
hill sincé 1853 and has at last opened
it. sufficiently to demonstrate that he
has a fortune there.
‘ALMost AN ACCIDENT,—P. E. Jefferis,ot Eureka, narrowly escaped being .
~ seriously injured by the explosion ef ~a
shot gun on Saturday last. He bor’ rowed the gun for the purpose of shooting a hawk, and by mistake two charges had been put into the same barrel.
The gun buret. near the breech, the
stock was broken and some of the fragments struck Mr. Jefferis in the face,
but he escaped without
injury than a slight bruise.
IMPROVEMENT.—Pratt, mine host of
the Glenbrook Park is preparing for
the Winter campaign. He has put on
a heavy coat of first rate gravel in front
of his howise so that parties can always
finda spot torest clear ofmud.
Ho-ror Grass VALLEY.—Teams
will be ready this evening at 6 o'clock
to convey all who want to go down to
join in “the “torchlight: procession. at
Grass Valley and hear Henry Edgerton,
the most eloquent ‘man in the State.—

Gnrowine Rerutation.—If the. éné
tire ence from South America, Central America and the West ladies, received by Mesars. Hostetter &
Smith, during the last twelve months,
were published at length, it would
probably be considered one of the most
extraordinary collections of approbatory
testimony on record. ‘The letters,
written in every variety of style, and
emanatin, from individuals of almost
every. class, are, nevertheless, all of
the same tenor. Physicians, priests,
artisans, lawyers, &c., tell one story,
admitting, without reserve or qualiftication; that the tonics heretofore in use
in those regions have been generally
rand justly superceded by HUST i'TTER’S BIT'TERS.
‘he confidence manifested by the
people oi these countries might be tairly
called enthusiastic. Yet these dre-not
the only tokens of the growing popa=
larity of 2
“HOSTETTER’S STOMACH BITTERS:
The foreign orders for the article from
Europe, Austratia, New Zealand, China,
‘. Japan, Kast tidies; Cape or Good Hope,”
Sandwich Islands, &c., have been _heayier than at any turmer period,
