Phelps, the original locator.of Phelps’ Hill; near Washington, in this county, made a rich strike about six weeks ago. Mr. Phelps commenced running a tunnel into the hill Hbout three years ago and has worked in it “more or less every season. The tunnel has paid expenses ever since he commenced work, but about six weeks ago he struck the main channel of gravel. He does not know the width or depth of the strata, but it is supposed to be from ten to twelve feet deep and=one hundred feet wide. The geld varies from fine grains up to the size of a pea, and he has found lumps worth $52.— the lumps-were-as—targe as the kernels of pea-nuts. As soon as the tunnel is ran through, Mr. Phelps proposes to put on hydraulic power and wash the ground off. He has stuck by thie old hill sincé 1853 and has at last opened it. sufficiently to demonstrate that he has a fortune there. ‘ALMost AN ACCIDENT,—P. E. Hostetter & Smith, during the last twelve months, were published at length, it would probably be considered one of the most extraordinary collections of approbatory testimony on record. ‘The letters, written in every variety of style, and emanatin, from individuals of almost every. class, are, nevertheless, all of the same tenor. Physicians, priests, artisans, lawyers, &c., tell one story, admitting, without reserve or qualiftication; that the tonics heretofore in use in those regions have been generally rand justly superceded by HUST i'TTER’S BIT'TERS. ‘he confidence manifested by the people oi these countries might be tairly called enthusiastic.
