Boe Bags ® Riches eiage & — sia NEVADA CITY, CAL. arene sesiaes Tuesday September 8, 1874. Mines. ‘There are some who entertain the belief that mifing industry will gradually decline, and counties now ex_tensively engaged in the business of xtracting the precious metals, will, ih a few yeurs, decrease in material . wealth and prosperity. That they will gradually decrease in popula: tion, and cease to pay fcr money invested inthem. It is probable that there may be mining countiés' where . such a state of affairs.may exist. . ‘There may be counties where mines“are not permanent and investments in them insecure, but it is not the case with this’ county.’ To-day its prospects are brighter than they ever wers._There.has. been more gold extracted and more money expended in opening out and developing new mines, more ditches dug, dams erected and water rights secured—all for the purpose of affordiig increased “ done in four times the sume Jength of time since the county was first settled. We hear of no complaints . from those who have worked their mines this year on account of pay. “On the contrary negrly all the mities of the county -bave yielded large re‘turns. Those. who have money invested in the mines have no . desire” to withdraw it, bul, -are° very anxious to invest-in othe» -mints. Forgign capitalists will find a eonfi_#éneceexhibited by méh of means —hving in-the—county; that wilt-con= vince them ‘of the permanenty of themining: interest, Instead “of the mines playing out ‘ina few years, it to judge that ten years from now the amountof bullion extracted will be double in the county what it is today, and the number of mines many times greater than at present. The . outlook is encouraging and argues well for the future of:the county. —_—_ Oo > -— No Crime, It is no crime in San Francisco to) darwa pistol and fire at an enemy indiscriminately to the great _d_nger of. passers. . DeYoung of the Chron: ~ivie; selected as public a place as the Street near the post office in San Francisco, and when B. F. Naupthaly appronched near the spot, blazed away at hii, regarilless of those on ihe streets, and did wound one __person by his reckless firing. Yet the grand jury of San Francisco say it . was ndta crime and lethim go scot freee. He deliberately took a stand there to killa man; but that ‘is all . right according to the grand jury. On what theory they base their decision, we know not; buat people will wonder what constitutes acrime Sed: . It takes mane 10 build a-mill, particularly if the machimery is not hereafter, if the alleged and plainly . proved shooting of DeYoung is not . one. e+e — Southern Oatrages. It is now reported’ that. the outrages committed in the South and the danger of a war of races had but little foundation, and the stories concerning them havebeen greatly exagyerated andit is fur political purposes. Those who ineite such troubles or who misrepresent them for selfish purposes, ought to grace the first tree they ace found near. If the reports were manufactured for the purpose of preducing a feeling . of sympathy in the North for the powers that be in thé South, they fell short of the purpose. Political advantages. can no nioré be gained by such a means. If the “Carpet Baggers”’ cannot control things without such meusures they had_ better get out.ae A Now Town, It does not take long to locate and “build up a new town, provided the locators -have plenty of money. And still these stories.were not imegivary. On Wednesday, train No. 7. of the St. Juseph and Denver, railroad, struck the grasshoppers between Axtell and Beattie. The insects covered the track two inches thick, and the engineer’ was completely at bis tratk covered with grasshoppers. waS he could and tried to drive ahead, and yet he was ‘actually nine hours making eleven miles. How many grasshoppers were killed no one will. ever undertake to say. The otl.eg morning, conductor Seott Sharp pulled out cf Seneca on time, and thonght he would have an easy rutt to St. Joseph. In this he was slightly mistaken. Two miles out the track was completely bloekacked by grisshoppers, and the: engineer found it. impossible to proceed. He hated to be beaten by such trifling inseets, but finally had to run back to Seneca and wait until the insects had crossed the track on their way southward.
