A recent clean-up at the mine proved highly satisfactory, and the chute now being opened will from appearances pay between $25 and $30 a ton. A Falsehood. We learned Thursday that a rumor is prevalent here and in Grass Valley that the TRanscrier applied the epithet ‘‘animals” to the five miners who recently attached the Merrified for wages due. There is not a shadow of truth in che report so far ao this. paper is concerned, We simply stated that the men displayed bad judgment in bringing the suits, and.-we now reiterate that statement. The lie on the Transcript was probably started by some ignoramus who could.not read English correctly. Went to the Fair. More Nevada City people went to Grass Valley yesterday to attend the Fair than have gone down before since it begun. Everything.in the way of a buggy or carriage that could be found in town was brought into requisition. The great attraction seemed to be the announcement that tke thousand dollar running race was to take place during the afternoon, ‘ Thé Collins Case ‘In the vase" of the People ‘vs. Collins, the convicted murderer of banker Cummings, the Supreme Court has allowed appellant fifteen days to file brief, and respondent fifteen days to reply, and the cause thereon to be sabmitted. cece Bank Exchange. The officers on Floral Display have been particularly active, and they have a floral bower which would be a credit to any fair. itis not the only noticeable feature, however,by any means, shown by the ladies. APPEARANCE OF GRASS VALLEY, Grass,Valley hemmed in by beautiful hills, looks from above like an extensive bower of trees, through which roofsand spires peep coyly and prettily. Much of this leafy show belongs to fruit trees. The’ orchards are not cultivated asin other sections. Many of them seem to be given over to grass, which at this time of the year looks very dusty anddry. Why is so? Formerly the fruit was allowed to rot on the trees or on the ground to a large extent. It was not near enough to market, Last year, however, several men made money by collecting it for canneries. This opened up a new field to some extent, but the frost last spring discouraged such an enterprise for this year at Iéast. Much of the land about Grass Valley isnot rich enough for the rapid growth of fruit trees. One orchard, which has been growing three years, would surprise Santa Clara county and Sacramento River growers by its small advancement. Other orchards have done better, The fruit has the fine flavor of mountain growth, LEVOTED TO MINING, It should be recollected that this district is still very largely given over to mining, Fruit growing is not a business as it is elsewhere. Neither igithe raising of fast» horses, although the draft stock is very good. MINES AND MINERS, The Agricultural Fair Grounds, with stock display and horse races, elbows two old mines, the Mount Hope and Scadden’s Flat. Just the
same were the agricultural products in the Pavilion, close about the exhibits of ores. The dust of the streets of Grass Valley and Nevada City is trampled into checks by the, hob-nailed shoes of the Cornish miners. They are large and powerful men, and have, for the most * part, worked in mines all their working life, and would not do ‘anything else. Their houses are not _What.poor . the desert, have been relieved from duty, and itis hard to tell when they will stop. The Racesat Grass Valley. John Baldwin (‘‘Gassy Jack”) of Gold Flat and-his two sons have been arrested for violation of the game laws, and will have a jury trial before Justice Blakey next Tuesday evening. . Alex. Gault is the complainant. One of the boys brought some live mountain quail into town Thursday, and the charge is that the defendants caught them in a trap. If this be true they should be made to pay the penalty.
