THE STILL RUNT.Incidents that Have Actually Transpired During the Chase After the
Highwaymen—A Few Suggestions,
The hunt for the robbers of the

The (Grass Valley, Union is of the
same mind as the TRANSCRIPT, judgingfrom the following remarks; which
would also apply to Nevada City
with equal force; At every election
held in Grass Valley in the last few
years it has been evident, from the
great time consumed in counting «the
vote, that the precinct should be
divided; and thé late election more
thanever demonstrates that newessity.
“By dividing the precinct into two or}
three the vote could be counted ina rea.
sonable length oftime, and thedemand.
of the public for the result more quickly and satisfactorily given, and-but
little, if any, additional expense incurred. From three to four hundred
Votes are as many asa precinct shou'd
have. This is the rule generally
being adopted’ at the East in the
cities and large towns, and San Franciseo has fitially adopted the same
plan,

Not Practical.
Said a wheel-horse -of that venerable party yesterday: ‘‘Now that
we have managed to carry Dan, Collins through in such good style, I
propose that-a two horse wagon be
hired, then all the Democrats in Nevada county get into it and .drive
around the county serenading every.
outsider who voted for Dan. But
stop,” he added reflectively, after a
moment’s patise, “‘the Workingrien
. night capture us, too, when we got
into the upper spart of the coutty. I
guess it will be wiser after all to
stay in the shadeof the Court House,
where the Republicans cai take care
of us.” . .
A Large Gold Bar.

well so that-he co‘ald have joined in
the hunt, he world have gone to the
place’ where thie stage was stopped,
circled aroun’, it in true’ path-tinder
style, and struck the desired trail in

4, There is at least. one man living on the Ridge that ought: to be arrested on general principles. Heis a

only question is, why is he not arrested?
neigh« EX-CONVICT BLAIR ARRESTED:
Marysville Appeal, Sunday, September 7th: ‘Ihe man Blair, who
is charged wfth the Moore’s Flat
stage robbery and murder, came to
this city last evening and surrender:
ed himself to Sheritt MeCoy at the
County Jail. " Under Sheritf Aldrich
says he came in’ ami stated who he
was; denied all knowledge of the
matter, but as the public had “‘spoted bim” as the man, and as he was
fully described and to some extent
known, he would fall into hands of
arties in search of the robbers and
e lynched. Mr, Blair asked the
protection of the Sheriff, Nothing
was found on the person of the accused, He will be taken to Nevada
when he can be safely delivered.
Circumstances are against this man.
His partner, if Blair is guilty, is
known, and there ig a chance for the
truth to conie out and justice be rendered. There is a risoner in the
Station House who forces Blair as
the person who proposed the robbery
to him,
Sunday morning Under Sheriff
Phil. Byrne armed himself with a
gun, revolvers and knives, and left

Af STRANGER TOOK THEM IN.
Satvarday some private citizens
#aw a stranger roaming about town,
and having a deep interest in finding
th’; robbers put up a job to “sound”
‘m. They got him engaged in con‘vere ation when he remarked with an
air of importance: —
“I know a way to make five thous‘nd dollars mighty easy _if I wanted
to doit.” ; :
__This served to make their suspicions still stronger, and they concluded to get him drunk in the hope
that he might disclose the fearful secret that they thought was gnawing
at his heart’s strings. They invited.
him to see the town with them, and
began setting up the drinks with a
prodigality that threatened’ td _e&
haust their purses soon. The biaiieh
stranger tossed off one bumper after
another with the reattiness of an old
hand at such business, frequently remarking that these Nevada City}
b’hoys were the rumthest-fellows he
had ever came across in the course
of his extensive travels. One deplorable fact stuck out from the beginning of the fun. The more liquor
that. stranger drank the sharper his
wits became, Determined not to
give up as long as there was any
hope of ensnaritythim, the citizenruin, Towards morning affairs
stood this way: The intended victim was straight as. a string; his
new found friends were so overcome by their numerous potations
that they could not tell a lamp post
from a policeman, ‘ The trick didn’t
work worth a cent.
ROUGH AND* READY MAN ARRESTED.
_For several days past reputable
citizens of Rough’ & Ready, which
téwn is located about eight miles
south-west of Nevada, have hada
strong belief that the robbers hailed
from their'immediate section. They
claimed to have good reasons for supposing that two certain men living
ifthe township were the’guilty ones.
On the strength of this, Judge Garthe, ‘Marshal Baldridge, A. Nivens,
Jr., chd two boys drove over there
early Sunday morniwg They found
one of the menin béd. The boys
who had seen the robbersin the yicinity of the robbery last week said
‘he was one of them. He was arrested, and the five started with
him. for Michael Lynch’s ratéh on
Rock: Creek, Instead of coming’
through this city they took a roundabout rbad. The prisoner began. to
cty and ‘moan piteously, fearing that
his captors were taking him to a secluded place to hang him. _ 4n_ spite
of all assurances that no WAtm was
intended, he would not be quieted, He
wa’ conveyed to Mike Lynch's, and
that individual, who had also seen
the rubbers, said at first glance there
was no reséftblance.” In eoming
back*from Roék Creek to this city
ohe of the’ wagon springs broke,
Judge GattMe procured another vehicle at‘ Wellington's stable and took
the man;' Who had been discharged,
back to’ Retryh & Ready. Both: of
the men—thé one arrested’ and the’
one supposed to have been his pal,
but who was not caught—have since
been proven“te have been seen in
Rough & Ready only a couple of
hours after the robbery and murder.’
Considering the distant they wonlid:
have been obliged to tra¥el ti’ get’
there, there is no foundatioi'for believing them guilty,
ARRESTED IN NEVADA,
One night last week a nian while’
drunk gave some parties to under.
stand in a confidential sort of way
that he had something to do with
locked up in the eity prison until
next morning when he was sober.
Then he proved an alibi without diisome chapparal at the roadside and
asked him for something to eat,
They had a half-famished look, and
had evidently been “roughing it”
for several days. He had no eatables excepting apples; and these
he gave to them, Arriving at SanJuan he gave the alarm. Word was
at once sent back ‘here. ‘Constable
ficulty and was released. _
WANTED THEM 'TO SPOT HIM,
A tall stranger, with a fierce mustache and astumpy clay pipe, stepped
up to Marshal Baldri
Scott and Deputy Sheriff Thomas
this summer, so far as heard from,
;
~
armed themselves, jumped: into a
bugey, and starte‘l fsrthe spring at
full speed. The night was very
dark. They p'-oceeded as far as
BR rdon’s .Brid ye several miles the
detectives kept—on setting—up—the}
committing the outrage. He was 4
tage robbers.
A SUMMING UP.
The sum and substance of this
‘whole affair is that the -officers, although putting-forth every effort,
have not yet succeeded in finding a
‘hot trail,” and appear to begin to
doubt their chances of ever arresting
the dastardly wretches. They are
much amused by the wild rumors
that are current in every direction;
and do not think it-worth while to
deny them. The arrests that lave.
been made mean nothing. They are
made to satisfy public sentiment
rathct than fot any other object. If
the robbers are caught it will be
through a stroke of good luck, and
that is about all-there is 4f it, Meantime peoplé who-are not on the inside should mbt place the least reliance in anything they héar unless it
comes from headquarters.

The Love of Flowers.
Of the many touching tributes paid

with the closing hours of Henry
