indicate that there could not have
been too much zealon kis part to auit
his Government, © which appears to
have been made a matter of issue of
the highest importance.
Those commenting on the surprising events of today agree that to
break away from this Government is
not merely an act of discourtesy, bu
of open hostility, te have done it
pending the investigation and progress
of the law in New Orleans.
If is significant, itis said, of an utter
disregard of the conventionalities and
ethics of modern diplomacy. Indeed,
in that light, this Government now
has a logical reason for feeling affronted at this lack of faith in its assurance
‘on the part of its hot-headed neighbor’,
It will probably turn out that the
Italian Government has acted very
hastily in this matter, and has unnecessarily involved two nations in a
serious difficulty .
The State Department has not yet
ceased the investigation into the
lynching, and it has not yet been fully
developed whether or not the men killed were Italian subjects.
The proper course would have been,
itis eaid, for the question of the citizenship of the men killed to have been
settled first, and then for seme sort -of
arbitration. By this action on the
part of Italy, the United States has
been cut off right in the middle of tha
investigation, and, it ig thought, treatedin any but a courteous manner,

this fact alone is sufficient to convince
him that there is no truth in the mesotha telegram,”’ said he, ‘appears
ridiculous in my opinion, for if such
was the case it would appear that Italy
had not advanced in civilization since
the fourteenth century.
"No, I don’t believe a word of it,
T can’t see any reason for any hasty
action in the matter, for the condition
of the case as now being investigated
by the Grand Jury in New Orleans
would not warrant any action.
“It ig more than likely that if the

Reform at Haugchand
Ready.
A wave of reform appears to have
struck Rough and Ready, although
that part of the county never has been
very wicked atthe worst. Numerous
residents of the town and its neighborhood who have for years enjoyed their
regular cocktail or toddy have voluntarily and formally sworn off not only
from the use ofall intoxicating beverages, but have also abjured such attendant pastimes as dice shaking, cold
turkey and the like, They’ have in
most cases signed solemn agreementa
to this effect and are to -forfeit penalties of greater or leas magnitude if they
swerve from the conditions agreed upon,
