Scarlet Fever.
There are several cases of scarlet fever
in town, but as yet it is rather mild in
form. It is probable that the disease
will have quite a run, as we understand
some of the children afflicted attended
school until taken down and that members of families in which there 1s sickness
from the disease have been going to
schoel right along. In this case the
‘children have been pretty well ‘‘peppered,”

Unien:—Two young men.of Grass
Valley, who are. more or less known in
social circles, will seon meet each other
in an encounter, the nature of which we
did not learn. , 1t seems that both these
yeung men were paying attentien to a
certain. young lady who has a wealth of
beautiful hair, and strange as it may seem
each supposed he had the yeung lady’s
‘attention and ‘miles exclusively to himself until they both met ene. evening at
the house of their fair friend. : Each
and each waited for the other te go; they
tinally left together. During their walk
to town C——— told R—— that he -was
very much™enamored of Miss —— and
asked R—— not to stand in his way:
To say that R-— was surprised is to
put it mildly; what right had this fellow
to make such a statement to -him when
+he was in love with her himself? He,
of course, indignantly refused te couatenance any such proceeding, and_ this was
the beginning of the hard feelings that
culminated’in the challenge to fight.
These young lovers who had fornierly
been friends were now enemies, and a
few evenings ago in the company of mutual friends a dispute: arose and they
hotly opposed each other; their pent-up
feelings would stand it no longer; the lie
was. passed and they shook hauda to
meet again. Our informer told us the
young lady heard of the affair and now
she refuses to recognize either of them. .
