als donk RNR DN nieatinareine <0 TUESDAY EV’NG APRIL 12, ,’92. ' xeception, for it is the intention to show ae Z THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. BROWN & CALKINS, Proprieters. THE EASTERN EDITORS. What an Exchange Has to Say About the. . Every town they visit should prepare te give a reyal welcome to the National Editorial Aesuciation:-on its coming visit to the State. ; The very large number of members who have promised to be of the excursion are worth entertaining at any time for their own sakes, but there are selfish reasons why the towns and State should join in showing them the best of the hospitality for which California is ‘proverbial. iS The men who ferm the National Association are the country edivers of the United States. They are not, like the League of Press Clubs, the repor ters of the city press of the country. In the League ef Press Clubs the proprietor of a paper -—the man who has the absolute control of its utterances—is the exception. Ih the National Editorial Associatien_the exception is the man who does not own hisown paper. From a cold business basis, therefore, the people of the S.ate can see that if it was important to get the friendship ofthe former, it is still far mere important to secure the good will of the coming guests. The country press has an immense infinence through the country. It is closer to the people amung whom it circulates, and represents them more closely than any journal of wide cirulation can de. It is, therefore, most advisable to have the controllers ef this press carry back # favorable impressien of California, that they may assure their people that the gorgeous stories of Califernia’s attractions and capabilities are not lies of the untruthful West. The classes reached by the ceuntry press are the solid farming and industrious working people.” They appeal to the very men that California in lvoking for immigrants wishes te reach, and in no way can they be reached so well as through the personal testimony ef the men who are about to visit the State. The Entertainment Committees who are to look out for the welfare of the visiters should be amply provided with funds. The busimess men and landowners of the State should be ready to contribute whatever may be needed toenable the committee to give them a sight of the main points of interest and a goed insight into the resources and advantages of California as the home of the small farmer. The object lessons that are given the visiters—are pretty sure to be passed on to the~constituents that the visitors represent and will have an effect that could never be sethé editers the land from one end to the Ao Elevtric Equine. George E. Benton, who resides on Indiana avenue, has discovered an electric horse. Benton stepped from a street car at Wabash and Eighteenth street while the horses were being trotted. He placed his hand on the flank of one of the animals, a bay mare,.and received a tremendous shock. The car was at tached to a cable train and sped onward After it had gone a block Benton returned and experienced a succession of slight shocks, which gradually died away asthe mare became cooler from. standing. -Benton then had the mare trotted up and down the street for ten minutes. She came back in a foam and was taken at once to the damp ground A dozen men then formed hands, firsi wetting the soles of thei? shoes thor oughly in the horse trough. As Benton put his hands.on the mare every man distinctly felt the shock. ‘Now one man let goat a time,” shouted Benton and they did so, the shock intensifying aseach man fell out, so that at last, when the number was reduced to three, the next man cried out, “Some of you fellers catch-hold -again;t-can’t stance Mr. Benton sent the mare trotting again, and meantime climbed a lamp post. Another man climbed after him and caught hold of his hand. He vlasped the post firmly with his. legs and gave his disengaged hand to a third man, who in turn placed -hishand on. the mare's: flank. Benton turned on the gas jet and_put his index finger on the nozzle of the jet. Instantly a series of sparks flashed through—the living chain from the excited horse and the gas blazed up Benton was so exhausted by this last ex periment that he had to be taken down from the lamp post. The manager of a dime museum has offered a large sun to the company for the privilege of ex hibiting thé horse.—Chicago Cor. KansaCity Times. One Trouble with the New Dimes, The new coins out from the mint th: year have run against various objection based on wsthetic grounds. It has re mained for a Washington man’ abou town to discover that the dimes are: failure from a practical standpoint. He has detected a defect beside which the bullheadedness of the goddess of liberty and the eagle’s attenuated wings ar mere trifles. This gentleman dropped into the thea ter on a recent evening, and being seized with a desire “to ascertain whether the diamonds worn by the star were yenu ine; turned toward the opera glass case attached:-to the back of. the next chair He fished a.new dime from his pocket and was about to drop the same into the slot, according to established usage. when he found that his dime would not enter. Further investigation with othe dimes and slots in tne vicinity showed that the new coinage is a misfit for one of its most universal purposes. The grave question arises: What is to be done with the machines when the old dimes drop out of circulation? The slot machine men would do well to have an understanding with the director of the are ‘willing to take the risk” the public other. “This is the time for the boasted . should refuse to permit them to take it. hospitality of California te come to the front. > Municipal Becton.
