cess in Every-Respect.
The entertainment for the Public
School Library w. given last evening at
the Theatre and was listened to by a
first part of the program was musical, .
and the hearty applause that followed
the various numbers attested the appreciation by the audience ofthe efforts of
those who had arranged the entertainment. The program opened with a chorus from the children in the first and second grades, which was well received.
The Glee Club gave two selections and
surpassed even their former efforts.
“‘With Sheathed Swords” was one ef the
credit on the Club'¢: instructor, Prof.
Davis. Mrs. Prisk’s sole was greatly
appreciated by the’audience, and sv determined was the applause that the lady
tain a second time, though already somewhat wearied by the two duets in which
she had previously appeared. The duet
given by Misses Adairand Meek was rendered in finestyle.
The second part of the program
by Miss Helen Cooper. If discrimination be allowable where all did well, in
the writer’s opinion this was the gem of
the evening. Miss Cooper’s understanding of the witty prologue was complete,
her delivery was easy, natural and correct. It might have been all this yet
not have risen above the level of a good
amateur performance, but it was more.
In the comedietta that followed, all
acquitted themselves creditably. There
was, however, an indistinctness of utterance and a tendency to play at the back
of the stage, of which amateurs can’ only
be cured by long experience., But nothing can look more charming than did
Miss Webber, and when a woman. looks
beautiful who cares, as Thackeray says,
whether she talks or keeps silent? Mr.
Martin’s rendering of his character was
intelligent and painstaking, and Mr.
benevolently. fatherly that many. young
ladies in the audience were with difficulty
restrained from imploring his osculatory
blessing on the spot. ’
The entertainment was a financial success. The receipts were nearly one hundred and forty d. lars, and the expenses
less than forty dollars. ° The proceeds will be devoted chiefly te buying
books for the children in the lower
grades.

movement to date $2,200, ef which the
Supervisors appropriated $1,000. The
Miners’ Association has 1200 members
and the Asseciation has contributed
$1200. This is a remarkably good
showing. Nevertheless we must double
our contribution. The Tidings suggests
that each of us add $1.00 to the $1.00 we
gave before, and let the Supervisors be
petitioned to appropriate another $1000.
We do not believe a single citizen would
say ‘‘nay” to this; rather, that every
citizen would endorse it. The utmost
confidence is reposed in the officers of the
Miners’ Association and in our delegates

the city. ‘The reduction in the price of
water toeach family using it from the

the coming year, this will make a saving
of considerable over $1,000 to water consumers-who most need a saving. ‘his

At Paddy Campbell's ranch, just be-}

happened late yesterday afternoon, which
may resultin the death of a three-yearold girl named Shaw. The little child
was playing about the house and went

and in falling it was discharged, the load
striking the child on the side of the face,
completely tearing away the cheek and
laying bare the teeth and cheek bone.
Dr. Harris was sent for, and at his request the child was taken to Grass. Valley. She is still alive, but remains in an
