Established Sept. 6, 1860. Terms—15 Cents a Week ; 60 Cents a Month ; $6 a Year. : A PROSPEROUS . TOWN. Nevada City, Nevada County, Calif, What” Our Correspondent at Floriston, « Nevada County, Has to Say. Eprror Transcrier :—Possibly a few lines may interest your readers from this remote section of our county, Amongst the various Nevada City pee: = as = : A NEW RAILROAD. San Francisco Capitalists Intend to Build a New Line, The air in San Francisco is full of. railroaul rumors, and tlie Chronicle say, that a number of the wealthiest men in that city have been meeting together considering plans and subscribing money to consummate the construction ofa read, These meetings have been going on quietly for the past six months and it was by accident that anything was learned of them. The gentlemen interested have pledged themselves zo build a competing road between San. ranciseo. and Salt Lake. : ‘Each of them has agreed te put’ up in gold coin the sum of $100,000 and each one of them has already paid into a wellknown local bank the sum of $25,000 in cash, being 25 per cent. ef the total sum guaranteed. The men engaged in this enterprise are Alvinza Hayward, W. 8S. Hobart, James G. Fair, James Phelan, E. L. G. Steele, A. S. Hallidie, W. W. Montague, Adam Grant, Joseph Donohoe, the Parrott estate, Henry P. Sonntag, J. B. Stetson and others, thirty in all, nearly all San Franciscans and all Californians. The $3,000,000 cash has -been subscribed and the balance of the money re. quired will be raised by floating bonds and selling the stock of the. company. The werk which has been done is pre. liminary, and the $750,000 now in bauk is a pledge of the earnestness of those engaged in it. It has been learned that the eagineers have been at work and are now, and that this plan of a transcontinental! road is entirely distinct frem any other, Ante Up The April number of Judge’s Library or Monthly Magazine of Fun, Ante Up, is filled with pictures devoted to the American national ‘game—not baseball, but poker. You will not find in it any rules which govern the game nor. any kind beat a full hand, but you cannot afford to keep house without first lookiug over the funny sketches of Ante Up. When we announced some months ago that we had the sole right to club for this Magazine at reduced rates, we did not realize its full importance. We realize it now. Good neighbor, if you do noi see Judge’s Library, why not try it fora year-and make yourself and your family happy? RV CELISGS ell ener one ae Has Anything Been Done? Will our Grass Valley contemporaries inform us what steps, if any, have been taken towards the selection of a committee of conference in that town to confer with a similar committee which has becn appointed here to receive the Eastern editors ? The Nevada City committee is anxious to get down to the work. Let us hear from you, gentlemen, as the tine is getting short and there is a great dea] of rustling to be done to receive those eiitorsin a style that will do honor to the A Big Auction Sale. As per advertisement ‘in aavther column it will be seen that Frank E. Morrill will sell at public auction on Tuesday, May 10th, at his old ranch in Pean Valley, all of his personal property, which consists of 50 head of hernad cattle, 75 horses, Holstein cows aud balls, wagons, buggies, harness, heusehold furniture, ete. Mr. Morrill sold his ranch some time ago, and contemplates taking & trip Kast after disposing of the above described property. This is the largest sale of the kind ever advertised in this county, and will, unJloubtedly, attract a large crowd of purchasers. A day or two age the Tidings stated that Ties. Andrews was the first Sheriff of Nevada vounty. -The Transorter denied it and said the records showed that John Gallagher was the man. To correct the statement the Tidings man_ became unduly irritated, and hunted the Transoairr (the largest and best paper in the county) all over to get in a growl. Fortunately, sv the Tidings man thought, he struck a ‘‘mare’s nest,” in the way of an item we cepied from his sheet and placed the creditin the middle instead of the top of the article, S.nall’ potatoes, Oe oe -Notice. The undersigned, having purchased the Paper routes lately owned by George Barton, will hereafverattend to the business and collect all amounts due en subscription. EEE . Brand Condensed Milk, Your grocer and eyes examined. No charge for examinaplehere are John Hamilton, E. G>Sukeforth, Mr. Randall of Blue Tent, Jack Galiagher, Scott Simonds and family, Jesse‘Thompson Jr., and E. W. Black. The sawinill of Mason, Kidder & Co., started up om the 7th inst, fer the season under the superintendency of E. G. Sukeforth, Mr. Randall ig. the head sawyer while John Hamilton is the boss carpenter and Jack Gallagher being cook at the logging camp. Messrs. Simonds and Hollings have been ‘‘snaking” logs te the head of the chutes for the past two months, so that ‘the mill could ran-to its full capacity of about 40,000 feet per day. The demand for lumber is very promising as the’ National. Ice Co. will erect another of tleirmammoth ice houses this Summer, which will make three inall, with & capavity-of-some 25,000 tons.. We anticipate quite ‘a lively camp this summer as the National Ice Co, contemplate some extensive imprevemeats on their ponds and premises. The Floriston Ice Co, will make Gonsiderable improvements, suvh as extending-the capacity of the pond. and building on some 4() feet. Last season we had the liveliest camp on the Truckee River and this season promises quite lively. The National Ice Co, has caused s. me newspaper notoriety, as being in the market to stay, has created what promises to”be an ice war between the two companies, Both deny thatany cutting has been practiced by their company, but as the Union Ice ©o., has a lively cempetiter you may leek for some cheap ice this summer, particula ly in San Francisco where the main struggle for business is being wiged. John Cashin and Scott Simonds, formerly of the Union are enthusiastic over the National, while most of the old stand bys of the Union, together with the drivers of the ice wagons, all followed the National when it opened for business in the city. There is some 125,000 tons of ice stored in the ice houses along the Truckee River. Probably mere than the de: mand will supply, as there are quite a number.of inachines to start up as soon as business will warrant. Mr. D. M. Dysart is endeavoring to ferm a stock company te start up a pulp mill hereabouts as there is au abundance of material for such an enterprise; if he can get capital interested in the enterprise, while water power is plentiful ata trifling outlay. Weare having a “howl” at the Fish Commissioner ef the State of Nevada, for not compelling the owners of Foulks’ dam to put in afish ladder te allow the lish te pass over during spawning season, thereby giving us an equal chance for the piscatorial sport. The Nevada people were loud in their effort to stop the dumping of sawdust in the Truckee River and it is nothing more than fair that'they should.insist upon the ladders being constructed at the various dams in their State. : Simonds & Hollings conduct the hote; aud are interested in the luinber business hee, Mr. 8. H. Simonds is also superintendent of the National Ice Co.’s business here. We are hopeful of having a voting precinct established here this fall. We have the required number of tax payers to have some 75 or more voters by electioii time. As we had even more than 150 last season it isreasonable to expect at least 74 this fall. I wrote to Supervisor MePheters and he seems to be faverable, if we present a petition, which we shall do shertly, Asit is now we are coinpelled to got. Boca, and the Way trains are ruuning it takes a day to make the trip and along late at night before we can return heme. The snow is disappearing rapidly and everything indicates an early season for the lumbering interests along the river. We have heard some complaints that there has not been much high waters to enable some of the lumber men to start the run of logs. X. Will Be Permanently Disfigured, Union :—The little girl whose right cheek was shot off by the accidental dischirge of a gun, at P. Miss Maggie O'Donnell explained and illustrated the use of the frame in the schoolroom. Miss Belle Millhone read an excellent piper on primary geography, and a lengthy discussion followed. Fourdoctors gave me up saying I could live but a short time. I gave myself up to my Saviour, determined if I could not stay with my friends on earth, I would meet my absent ones above.
