fences around private residences. This
and will probably . ecome general in
cities where cows, horses, pigs, dogs and
chickens are not permitted to roam the
public streets at” will, and whereyards
only average from twenty to fifty feet
square. The Grass Valley Union advocates the no-fence idea for that town, as
well as for all other towns. A house
without a fence around it may look very
nice, but just imagine such a thing in
either Nevada City or Grass Valley. It
is all a person can do, with a good,
strong, high fence around his premises, to keep wandering animals on the
out ide. And then nearly every residence lot in the two towns contains more
or less fruit trees, which at the wroper
season, barring the inroads of the codlin
moth, scale bug, etc., are very tempting
objects to every small boy and many big
ones. Without an intervening barrier in
the shape of a fence (barbed wire preferred) a visit to and sudden departure
from the aforesaid fruit producers is not
fraught with so much hazard or troubte
and the consequence would be a very
noticeable decrease in the fruit crop.
Until our towns prohibit live stock,
dogs, chickens and other fowls from
limits, and the people stop raising small
boys, and-we have a policeinan on every
corner, then, and not till then let the
epitaph-of the -goodold-fashioried fence
be written.

To Resume Operations.
Several years ago a company dug
tunnel through the Rush-creek bend on
_ the South Yuba river, with the intentien
of working the tailings from the river.
The tunnel was flumed and two or three
runs made, but the results were not satisfactory and work was stopped. George

of the work at that time, is here again
