"EXPERIENCE OF PEOPLE.
Throwing Light op the Problem, How
Long Should One Know Folks Before
Making Friends of Them ?
In a recent home circle eonversation
the writer asked the question: How long
and well should one know a person before committing himself to confidential
friendship? Tho answers, as wasto be expected, were as-different as the natures of
t! +f} who made them.
“fon Jaman tolorably well at
sight,” si aid an impetuous New Englander, not yet familiar with metropolitan
ways. “If he has an honest eye and a
good face, is not marked with a rummy
nose, and talks senstbly, I should not be
afraid to ask him.to my home. He
might turn out badly some time, and I
_might be ashamed of having known him,
but that cannot be helped. One never
knows the whole of anybody’s life history.” .
There was an ominous pause after this
effusive statement, It was not pleasant
to express less generous. sentiments, but
the conntenance of tlie auditors showed
tliat they could not agree with him.
“You wiil find that you cannot goon
that rie here,” said. one who has lived
lenger in thiseity, ‘IL used to feel just
that way and acted accordingly, but now
Imake it a rulenever to invite an acquaiutanee to call until I have known
him favorably at least three months. If
Iam introduced to a stranger and like
his appearance, I try to be cordial to him
durive thas time, Not hearing anything
acinst him; or seeing anything wrong
al. at him, E then give him an invitation,
“T was awfully taken in once by one of
the most charming fellows in the world,
He jgvked likeva prince and talked like
an angel, but he isin Canada now and a
bank down town mourns for him and seyeral thousand dollars which he stole,
Since then I have not been hasty in mak»
ing friends,”
‘“!Three*months is not nearly long
enough,” said a bright, chatty lady, the
sister of a wellknown clergyman, ‘Ben
