THE CENTENNIAL
The Incline Upaise Completed to the Surface
—310 Feet.
Enterprise: A letter under date of the
llth instant from Superinintendent
Richards gives the following information
to the owners of the Centennial :
“J started one man to work duwn from
the surface, and we made connection, completing the uprise. It is 310 feet from
the top of the main tunnel to the surface.
The opening is 25 feet higher than the
bed of Deer Creek. ‘The main tunnel is
in 140 feet beyond the foot of the up aise,
making a little over 2,200 feet from the
mouth of.the tunnel to the face. I prepose.to keepfall the mem werking in the
face for the remainder-of the mouth.”
The upraise mentioned was started last
Fall for air and water purposes, and the
survey tuins out to be correct. All the
water required for gravel washing purposes can can now be easily s at down the
incline from Deer Creek, and it will not
be long before the ledge and valuable
gravel bed already developed will be made
financially available. The latest gravel
sirike, at the face of the tunnel, prospects
good pay. It is of a fair washing charac:
_ ter, and centains more and coarser round
wash bowlders than heretofere met with,
indicating the approach to er presence of
the long anticipated back channel,

Poker With a Vengeance.
—
Yesterday afternoon two men became
involved in a dispute over a game of
cards in a Commercial-street saloon, one
of the parties accusing the other of robbing him. The accused grabbed up a heavy
iron poker and taking it in both. hands
struck with all his might at the ether
man’shead. The latter ducked his head
just in time to escape being hit, and thus
saved his life, as he surely would have
been killed had he received the blow, The
desvending poker struck the steve and
mashed the doer into fragments, No arrests,

~~ AYDRAULIOKBRS AT WORK.
The Sacramento Bee iets ‘Excited on -theSubject Again, =~
The Anti-Debris organ at Sacramente,
in & quadruple leaded article, spins out the
following :
The Bee has it from the very best of
authority that some miners have not kept
the faith of the Miners’ Convention,
keep it. That Convention made a. ceompact with the valley people that a truce
should be declared—that both sidés should
de everything in their power to rehabilitate the industry of hydraulic mining,
provided it could-bextotie-without injury
to the homes and farms of the valley. In
the meantime, the Miners’ Convention
asked all hydraulic miners to stop their
operations pending a settlement of the
question, and the Anti-Debris Agsociation
Galled in their watchmen from the hills,
The Bee believes that the members of
the Miners’ Convention are honest and
acted in good faith in this matter, and
that they desire that no chance shall be
given on either side*to say that any
pledged word has-been broken, or even
evaded. ‘They cannot control outsiders,
theugh, it would seem, and the fact stares
us in the face today that hydraulic mining is going on in Sierra, Plumas, Yuba
and Nevada counties ; that there are six
white men employed at it where‘there is
oue Chinaman ; that three large hydraulic
mines have been started since the adjournment of the Miners’ Convention ; and that
chere seems to bean intentien on the part
of many hydraulic miners. to go mght
ahead with their work. of destruction,
and Virtually te say: ‘The word of the
Miners’ Convention be damned ! We were
nofin that Conventien, and we will not
be bound by it!” .
These facts, with all necessary details,
wein.the possession of the Anti-Debris
Association. What use the Directory will
nake of them we do not know. But cercain it is that they cannot afford te pass
the matter over in silenes.
As The Bee said a few days ago, hy:
traulic mining must stop pending the perfection of some plan whereby the mines
can be worked without detriment to the
valley below ; and, if that cannot be done,
they must cease tu operate.”
Of conrse the Sacramento paper, would
sot-if.it could, do justice to anybody
w anything connected with a hydraulic
nine, notwithstanding its editor ovcuJied a prominent position in the Miners.
Jonvention. It is just as easy for the
see to tell the truth about the hydraulckers as it is to falsify, bub it wont do
i. That sheet, says: ‘‘The fact stares
us in the face today that hydraulic mingis geing on in the Sierra, Plumas,
Yuba and Nevada counties; that there .
are six whits men empleyed at it where
there is one Chinaman.” :
The Be: knows that the report made
ry the spies, Magruder and Wadworth,
(which the Marysville Appeal stated had
veen discharged and which statement
was wholly untrue) was to the effect that
she only hydraulicking done in Nevada
sounty was by twe Chinese companies
which the TRanscrirT exposed. The
i'ranscrierT located the places where
he Heathens were at work, and after
publication was made, the Yuba county
spies were sent up here, before the Miners’ Association had a chance to get at
them. The fling at Nevada county is
contemptible,as the white miners have reigiously kept their word, And the Bee
says, ‘‘there is an intention on the part
of many hyilraulic miners to go right
ahead with their work of destruction,
and virtually say: ‘The word of
the Miners’ Convention be damned !’”
ft utters sentiments which
aud only inteaded to bitter
feeling in the valley against the
honest men in the mountaius. Although
we presume the Transceipr should not
take notice of the frothings of such an
unfair and unjust sheet, yet, we do it
more for the purpose of showing th true
character ef the ‘‘olive branch” editer of
the Bee. We were really green enough
to believe that the Bee would never again
resort to spiteful words against the hydraulickers after the editor’s speech in the
Miner’s Convention, and as he immediately flooded the mining sections with
his paper, as much as to say, ‘‘Boysin the
} mountains I want you to take iny paper
now as . have repented of all my lying
about yeu in the past and from now will
be your friend,” The Bee man was not
disappointed in the large number of subscribers he got by such an appeal, but the
boys in the monntains are damned badly
disappeinted in the ‘‘olive branch” editor.

The Spies Are Here Again.
. Three horsemen, engaged in the highly
cultivated business of spying, and employes of the Anti-Debris Association,
passed through town at 7 o cleck Sunday
morning, going in the direction of the
Little York or Washington mining districts, this county. There is one thing
certain they will not find any illicit mining carried on by white men. W» learn
that the Chinamen, who wére caught in
the act of hydraulicking, ceased all operations at the time they were told to do
ao, and therefore we fail to see the object
of the spies nosing around this section.

RASTER. SERVICES.
They Were of Aa Unusually Interesting
Character on Sunday.
The old brick building of the Congregational Church was crowded again to its
outer doors on Sunday evening. ‘The
people expected a pleasant entertainment
but their most sanguine expectaions were
exceeded. The young ladies and chil:
dren whdtook part in the two pieces entitled ‘‘Resurrexit’’ and ‘The Easter
Wreath” revealed the effect of superior
training: The choir, which has been
growing im popularity, never did better.
Miss Ninnis and Miss Alice Caldwell in
their recitations displayed great -elocutionary ability and the solo sung by Miss
Annie Webber was superbly rendered.
The church was decorated with a great
variety of flowers, including calla lillies,
roses, tulips, ete., that were sent from
San Francisco and Ma ysville by friends
of the pastor, A collection of $18.90
was taken up.
The Easter services at the Methodist
Church on Sunday evening were really
grand. The anthems, songs and recitatations were of an appropriate and interesting character. The chancel and a'tar
never looked prettier .or centained so
many beautiful calla lillies, tulips, roses
and evergreens as on this occasion, and,
withal, they could not have been better
arranged. The building was crowded
to its utmost capacity by a highly appreciative audience. Swart, the ph stographer, took a view of the floral offerings
