At a recent meeting of the AntiDebris Association of the Sacramento valley it was ‘decided to publish the reports of the watchmen employed to patrol the hydraulic mining section, that the public might be advised.as to those mining corporations which were obeying or disobeying the law. The following réport has been handed to the Appeal by the President of the Association, for publication: We-have visited and inspected a 7 about one andt one-half miles ve New York Flat. A. F. Roberts is at work with a smatl monitor; he hasa 13-inch pipe and a 2-inch nozzle, and rans about 200 inches of water under 110 feet pressure. Banks about 15 feet high, composed mostly \ of red clay. Two dams—below him have Caught the tailings, but. both dams have been full for some time. Mr. Roberts has five white men at work, and uses such water as he can catch, and that was very plentiful at the time of our visit. We visited a mine on Rattlesnake Creek, about four miles southeast of Grass Valley.-The mine is owned’ or managed by L. Wheeler, who informed ushe did not wish to be sued, and would cease work if his debris was doing any damage. The North’ Bloomfield; Union Hill, Eureka Lake, O’Farrell at Chimney Hill, McIntosh and Badger Hill mines, have beenvisited-and-inepected. At North 1 Bloomfield we found one 6-inch monitor in. ‘use, with water that came Humbug Creek. _-The-main ditch, which supplies this mire, is now being repaired, but so far has not been in use since the heavy snowfall of last winter. The water now used was running into the settlin: pool, which has been enlarged since we last visited the mine, by stopping up he lower incline. The water in this pool has improved in appearance some, but it is still pretty muddy. A Mr. Radford has gone to Africa to superintend a hydraulic mine there. The present superintendent of the North Bloomfield mine is J. G. Mather, who séems to be a very clever and respectable gentleman. At Union Hill nothing was being done While-we were there, but they have impounded their tailings in their excavation. A large catch-dam, behind which the Eureka Lake has been impounding its tailings,’ ‘went out’ on the 7th instant; nothing but a large volume of water escaped. A Chinaman who was workig in the ravine below the dam has not been seen nor heard of since the dam broke. _A. 8. Bigelow has been at work on a small scale in the O'Farrell mine. He impounds his tailings in the excavation, and the water is not so very bad. Nothing is being done either in the McIntosh mine at Chimney Hiil, orin the Badger Hill mine. We tiave visited the mines at French Corral and Sweetland. Found the Milton still drifting and prospecting their ground. They have washed no dirt, except what they have drifted out, for three months, Those Chinamen at Sweetland were ‘*cleaning’’ bedrock, and washing very, little dirt. Their water is now gone, and they cannotrun much more this winter, As soon as we have inspected other lovalities to which you have directed us, we willinform you fully regarding’ the situation and condition of the‘ hydraulic mines there. The snow is going off slowly, and the roads are very rough, at » The Werld Knriched. In-a few. days Bug Commissioner Rodda will-have finished his rounds, trict Attorney a list of names of persons who have refused to or who have not properly sprayed their fruit trees as ordered. The District Attorney will be obliged to commence suits. The Commissioner notes that on the outskirts and outside of Grass Valley the scale are very few. In the town and especially on either side of Wolf creek the pernicious insects abound, however. They are found more frequently in the tops of trees than on the trunks, and the best plan in such cases is to trim the trees close, and wash the trunks and main limbs thoroughly, asing a brush. Many jpeopledo their utmost to retard the work of the Commissioner, in many instances the official’s ‘‘cheek” in entering orchards and premises being dilated on by master masculine and feminine tongues. Rodda proposes to ‘‘get there all the same’’ and make the delinquenta wish they had heeded his gentle admonitions. PROF FOSTER, His Lecture to the Nevada City High School Classes on Thursday Evening. The first of the High School lectures: took place Thursday night before. an audience that notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather well filled both of the High School rooms. _ The pupils of the three classes entered together at eight o’clock and presented a fine appearance. opened the evening: with a few remarks explanatory of the nature and purpose of the lectures, saying that they were intended, primarily fer the pupils themselves, the school officers and the parents of the High School children, though any othérs who would find interest in attending, were welcome. Mrs. Beatty then delighted the audience by an instrumental solo, as to the rendering of which the lady’s name is all that needs be said. The speaker of the evening, Professor Granville Foster of Grass Valley, was then introduced and kept alive the interest of the audience for an hour and }a-half upon the subject of ‘Socrates and the Socratic Methods of Teaching.” Commencing by commenting; upon the fact that the ancients were farther advanced then we usually give them.credit for, for the proof of which were adduced their attainments in various usually uncredited directions, the speaker spoke especially of the fact tbat the great minds of ancient times were nearly all teachers. Pagssing then to the early life of Socrates, his youthful career as pupil among the classic scenes where he was presently to become the master was briefly and graphically sketched. A few humorous words were thrown in wtih regard to the domestic life and infelicities of the sage, and were appreciatively received. Socrates’ peculiar methods of teaching were then developed and illustrated though the means of blackboard diagrams, the conclusion being reached that modern teachers would do well to model their teaching by that of this greatest of the ancient Greeks. In conclusion the Professor lent tothe evening’s entertainment one of its pleasantest features by a graceful compliment to the appearance and behavior of the High School classes. Concluding the program was a vocal solo by Mrs. Geo. Smith which was given in the lady’s usual brilliant style and was warmly received, Altogether the evening was a very pleasant one, and an encouraging opening for the course. —_————e ae Iv you suffer pricking pains on moving the eyes, or cannot bear bright . ~ light, and find your sight weak and failing, you should promptly use Dr. J.
