A Necessity of Health,
It is a prime necessity ef health tha:
the action of the bowels should be kept
regular. But the way to overcome a}
tenfporary fit of constipation, or to
ly chronic costiveness, is not to
deluge the stomach and drench the
bowels with purgatives of violent and
painful action. The happy medium
‘between an inoperative and violent
cathartic is Hostetter’s Stom:ch Bitters, which acts just sufficiently upon
the bowels to relax them, without
pain, and while being a wholesome tonic, as well as aperient, has the effect
of strengthening both them and the
stomach, and promoting the well being
of the whole internal. economy. The
removal of bile from the blood, increased activity of the liver, usually
dormant in cases of custiveness and
sound digestion follows the use of this
beneficent medicine, as-thorough and
genial in its effects as it is safe and
purein composition. Rheumatism, fever and aguo, kidney troubles and
debility are also remedied by it,

Prof. Michell’s Bal Masque—A List
of the Characters—Fine Music
and a Joyful Time,
There have in years gone by been
many and great masquerade balls at
this city, but none of them, were more
enjoyed by participants and spectators
than the one at Armory Hall Friday
evening. By half past eight the
gallery was full to overflowing and
about that time the dancers began to
throng in. At half past nine the
grand march was called, and the
motley procession .of merry-makers
presented an amusing and pleasing
spectacle as they filed around the
Hall. Prof. Goyne’s orchestra — ol
seven pieces occupied the music stand
and the class and rendition of their
selections have never been. excelled
in the county. In the management of
the floor Prof. Michell was assisted by
Messrs. M. M. Baruh, James Grimes,
Howard L, Dowglass and Ralph Webber. At eleven o’clock there was a
second march and at its conclusion the
dancers were formed in a hollow
square extending around the Hall.
The committee on awards, consisting
of County Treasurer Shoecraft, J. N.
Spencer and E. A. Tompkins, announced that they had decided the best
sustained lady’s character:to be that
of the old lady with the knitting, and
presented her with the prize .consisting of a handsome brooch. The
gentleman’s prize—a neat scarf-pin
—went fo the individual who personated St, Jacobs Oil, . These two parts
were taken by Mrs. B.S. Rector and
Fred 8S. Lester respectively. The
committee had much difficulty in determining ‘who was entitled to the
lady’s prize, abd they hesitated for a
long time between Miss Clara Baruh
asan aged peddler of peanuts and the
lady to whom it was eventuallly
given. Upon the announcement of
the winners there was a’ general unmasking. The surprises were in
many instances overwhelming, as the
mass of the characters were deceivingly attired and their actions were consistent with their disguises,
Following is a list of the dancers:

A Sucker Flat Centest. :
Friday’s Appeal says: In the contested case of Kelley vs. Cramsie, in
the U. S. Land Office in Marysville,
the opinion: of the Register and Receiver was yesterday filed in favor of
the defendant, Wm. Cramsie. The
contest was brought by Wm. Kelley,
to set aside Mr. Cramsie’s homestead
entry, on the ground that it covered
the old townsite of a mining camp
known as Sucker Flat. Mr, Kelley
claimed that it covered his house and
lot, which he had purchased as pertaining to said townsite, . But there
isno record that any steps had then,
or have since, been “taken to obtain
from the Government any land as the
townsite of Sucker Flat, which was in
the 50’s, a thriving settlement of
miners, ad has dwindled down to but
three or four residonces, and they
are scattered seme distance apart in
what.is now known as. Dutch Flat ravine. ~ Mr. Cramsie is the oldest
present resident of this scattered
community, and the only ‘one who
has made a filing on the land in
Sucker Flat ravine. Hehastaken up
a homestead there, is cultivating his
land, and has many improvements;
Mr. Kelley has been a resident of Montana for the past two years, but during
that time his family have been living
at Sucker Flat.

results aggregated only fifteen dollars,
which wasa disappointment to the

Lawyer Caldwell Continues His Remarks on Its Teaching in theSchools,
Nevapa Orry, April 19.
Ep:ror Transdxiet—Since writing
the article published in your valuble
journal of Thursday, I have made
some inqniries as to the responsibility
for neglecting in the public schools of
this city to give instruction in the
branches of education as provided for
in section 1665, of the political code of
the State.
That there has been such neglect is
admitted by the teachers, but they
seem to think taat the responsibility
rests with the Board of Education of
Nevada Oity. Now I do’ not wish to
attribute the neglect to the teachers or
the Board, but must place it where it
belongs,
The Board has absolutely failed to
provide for instruction in arithmetic
in either the High or Grammar
Schools. Now while I do not. object to
the teaching of Latin or other studies
authorized by Boards of Education,
they must not be taken up to the exclusion of any branched named in
section 1665,
I was astonished when the fact appeared that the Board had banished
arithmetic,or instruction therein, which
is about the same thing, from the higher departments for the last two years.
In the next place, it seems that
grammar and arithmetic are virtually
neglected in all the grades below the
grammar by reason of the system of
promotion that prevails, via: only one
promotion each year, If a child fails
in the requirements of the iron-clad
rule of per centage, no mutter by
how smulla percentage, he or she
must wait acother year. This is diss
couraging to the child, also to the parent who is always deeply interested in
the welfare of the child, If promotions
were made'‘quarterly, as is done in Bt,
Louis, Louisville, New York city, Chicago and Cincinnati, and many other
places, the child need wait but three
months for another trial. The system
of quarterly promotion in the primary
grades bas been found good whereever adopted,
I believe the children of Nevada City . 4
are as brightas the childran of any
othe city in the United States, and il
o' ¥ syetem of promotion were 60 mod:
if od that they might have a chance of
promotion every three months» a majority of them would enter: the Grammar school in their twelfth year and
the High “school at about fourteen.
The holdback system ie wrong, and
should beso modified as to let the
children progress,
Yours respectfully,
J. 1, CALDWELL,

A Nevada City Inventor Seems in a
. Fair Way te-Succeed—
At Last. ‘
cee
Thy following from the Baltimore
(Md.) Daily News of the 12th instant,
relative toa former well-known citi'zen of this place, will be read with interest here:
About afear ago announcement was
made-of the-arriv.! in this city of Mr.
Robert M. Fryer, an engineer who his
devoted the labor of many years to a
new ide: in marine architecture which
is te produce a vessel for passenger
service which will neither sink nor
burn; and which will travel through
the water ata comparatively high rate
of speed. Mr, Fryer’s plans, which
had already received high endorsement from eminent engineers, received here likewise the endorsement of
the best local talent, including that of
Mw N. H. Hutton, engineer to~ the
harbor board, and Mr, H. Ashton
Ramsay, engineer, both of whonr are
so well known in Baltimore as to render their judgment of any enterprise a
guarantee of its excellent promise.
It has been agreed among some of the
prominent business men of Baltimore
toaid in the construction ‘of a vessel
upon’ Mr, Fryer’s plans, After a care:
ful investigation of the affairs. of the
Arrow Steamship Company, in whose
right the patents covering the ‘Fryer
System” of ship building is vested, it
was decided by these gentlemen to orcare of the building of a.trial vessel to
demonstrate the feasibility of the system. Accerdingly a number of gentlemen have associated themselves under the name of the Monumental Construction Company of Baltimore City.
All arrangements have been made
with the parent company, through
which work on the vessel will be begun and pushed tocompletion without
delay under the superintendence of
Mr. Fryer, The vessel will be built at
the works formerly occupied by Mr,
Ramaay at Locust Point.
his enterprise will be watched with
deep interest, for should the experiment prove successful and the vessel
turn out what its inventor claims, the
name of Baltimore will be associated
with triumph as great as that which
accompanied the sending of the firat
telegraphic message from this city to
Washington, .
