A CANDID ADVERTISER
The Difference Between Results When Advertising and When Not
A striking proef of the value of advertising is furnished in the report of E.
Avery McCarthy, manager of the Sunny
Side Land Company, of San Francisco,
made a week ago to the stockholders of
the corporation, and published in part in
the Examiner of Thursday. In this report McCarthy calls attention to the fact
that for five months ending October J,
1891, the Company advertised most liberally in the daily papers, and as a result
the sales for the period named amounted
’ ¢o $331,780. On the date named the allowance for advertising was cut dewn by
the Directors of the Company, who. believed that it was no longer necessary,
and in consequence the sales for the next
five months amounted to only $30,410, er
only about one-tenth. * The demonstra:
tien was s0 convincing that the Directors
at once ordered the outlay for paper advertising increased to the original footing,
and the newspapers were, advised of the
Company’s desire to again occupy its
former space:

looked for than the sudden giving way of
a constitution sapped by overwork, unremitting anxiety or exposure to hardship
and malign climatic influences. Against
the disastrous effects of each and all ef
these, Hostetter’s'. Stomach Bitters is an
effectual safeguard. It fortifies the system against them by infusing into it
frésh vigor begotten of renewed and complete’ digestion and assimilation of the
food, and its consequent reparative action upon the exhausted tissues and impoverished circulation. No preparative
for the undergoing, without injury, of an
unusual amount of bodily or mental work,
no means of averting malarial infection,

water equals this superlatively fine defensive invigorant. Take it for dyspepsia,

Aristocracy Open to Offers,
The following advertisement lately
appeared in an English newspaper;
“Directors wanted of good social
standing for a new company now in
course of formation; qualification will
be found for selected applicants, and remuneration will be on a liberal scale.”
To this there were 141 replies received:
One earl, one viscount, four barons,
seven baronets, one knight, thirteen
honorables, six members of parliament.
four generals, one admiral, nine colonels,
four majore, fourteen army captains
three without rank or title.
some very amusing letters accompanying the applications. The earl said: “.
need not point out that, should you en
tertain my proposal, an important leverage in procurihg a good subscription of
public capita] will be gained by my title
which is an old one, and likely to prove
an attraction to investors. I may als
state that if appvinted I should alway:
make it a point of driving to the genera:
meetings in my broughaim and pair, with
servants in full livery. This, I have
been told by friends sitting on compan)
boar.is, is a-great—factor in, inspiring
sharcholders with confidence.”
One of the barons wanted to know “‘if
the. fees were paid in advance, irrespective of any profits made by the company.”
ment wrote that he had no doubt that
if he were appointed, it would result in
heavy purchases of shares in his constituency, where he was very popular
“And,” he added, ‘it would be well i

A Bed of Natural Coke.
Natural coke is the last addition t
the wonders of fuel formation.and w«
may soon expect to hear of’ natural can

Wallaby yclept Australia—the home oi

This deposit of coke closely resembles

made at the Bulli Pass mines in New
Soutn Wales. The coal measure at this
acres and is six feet in thickness.
The upper half of the seam, it is interesting to note, differs but little from
lower portion of the measure is natural
isclearly defined and distinctly traceable all through the workings. A peculiarity about this natural coke is that it
is slightly heavier than the ordinary
manufactured article and contains a
greater perceutage of fixed carbon, but
axouch smaller quantity of. ash anda
lower percentage of sulphur. This nat
iral coke, it is gratifying to learn, burns
without smoke and can be mined for
much less than the cost of manufactured

four years, has been pronounced marp-wetoma:and the cause and cure alike
with the. case and given rise to many
wonderful stories,
Mrs. Hopkins is between forty and
fifty years of age, and was sent to the
almshouse about six years ago from
Rose Valley. About three years later
she suddenly. lost speech. James W.
Robinson, the county physician, decided
that the woman was suffering from paralysis of the vocal cords. He consulted
Dr. Andrew F. Sheldon, an old army
physician and surgeon, and decided to
use an electric battery. The current
was passed through the back of the neck
and mouth every day. After about one
month’s electric treatment the matron
was much surprised upon entering the
mute’s room ‘one morning to be greeted
by a loud ‘Hello” from Mrs. Hopkins.

He Might Well Be Placid.
The members of a certain congregation are still laughing over an episode of
last Sunday. The young minister's engageiment to a certain pretty girl named
Grace in the parish had just been announced after a long time, in which
every other pretty girl had thought that
possibly she stood a chance of being the
favored one, for the young divine was,
without meaning it, perhapsa bit of a
flirt.
He's a little absentminded, too, and
when the time came to give out the
hymn he announced placidly, ‘Hymn

of the young and giddy, which gradually spread until it even reached the

A Giddy Girl of Seventy,

Mrs, Livermore. announced her approaching seventieth, when Mr. Whittier replied, ‘‘Get thee along, get thee

Price of Coffins Going Up.
The Cleveland coffin trust has been

many followers since this notice of advanced rates, and coffins are taking the
