FACTS, FASHION,
Pads, Fakes and Faneies About Cigars and
Tobacco.
Written and Compled by “GIFF,” the
N. 8. of Md.
The four hundredth antiiversary of the
discovery of tobacco will occur in the
second week.of November next.
After Columbus had taken possession
of San Salvador he sailed off and diseovered the island of Cuba. An exploring
party which he dispatched. into the interior reported _on their return that they
had found the natives ‘‘carrying lighted
firebrands wherewith they kindled one
end of small rolls of dried herbs, while
they put the other end between the lips,
sucking the smoke through the roll, and
then puffing it out through the mouth
and nostrils.” From that time the use
of the weed has spread over the world.
Statesmen, philosophers, poets, divines and undivines have sung its praises,
and been inspired by its use.
Since the time when James I. issued
his ‘‘Counterblast against Tobacco” the
weed has been widely disclaimed against.
The pulpit has denounced it, physicians
gave prated against the danger to health
from its use, temperance societies have
pictured its demoralizing effects, but in
spite of all their efforts it has been fowad
impossible to stop the use of tobacco.
. played by the average smoker about Keymakes it saleable, regardless of quality. .
There are no end to brands and titles.
The nomenclature of styles, sizes and
shapes are mostly high-sounding and
would fill a large volume. There are
Cayados, Prensados, Trabucos, Londros,
Regalias, Princessas, Crevas, Caballere:,
Flor Finos, Esparteros, Cazadores, Rothschild, Liberadores, Perfectos, Conquistadore, Key West, etc., ete.
The amuunt of ignerance disWest cigars is appalling. The idea prevails with them that Key West isaforeign
country, when our geography points it as
part of Florida, U.S. A. Another fancy
is that Key West cigars are made of imported or Havaua tolacco, when the fact
is they are covered with a Florida wrapper and filled with a domestic tiller from
Pennsylvania, Obio and other States.
A few are made of Havana but no greater
per tent. of Havana is used in Key Wiggt
than any other part of the Union. But
the name ‘‘Key West” has a foreign click
to it that catches the public ear“and tle
public are hoodwinked, and mistake
name for quality.
Smokers differ in fancy and notions
about their cigars, their. shape and color.
There are degrees in cigars as in wine.
In the kingdom of tobacco as in the eminevitable rivalry between the blonde .
and the brunette, the dark and the light,
nettes are considered strong the blondes
are not always mild. The true smoker
It is likely to continue to soothe the nervous system of man whether used in-the
shape of a fragrant cigar or in the pipe,
“tipped with amber, mellow, rich and
ripe.” The world, particularly the
United States, has derived from it a profitablé source of revenue.
The internal revenue reports for the
month of July, 1892, here given, show
the enormous amount consumed in this .
country. : = ?
Product of the United States for the
month of July, 1892:

Cigarettes (numbers) .... 242,611,000
Manufactured tobacco (Ibs.). 20,780,684
Snuff (Ibs.). 2.. -. 831,138
The revenue collections on the product
. foots up the snug sum of $2,686,412.55. .
If we add to the above the number of
imported cigars sold, and the July production as an average for the twelve
of cigars to be about 6,000,000,000.
The use of cigars grows rapidly and
has assumed dimensions that far exceed
the production ef good-tobacco; hence we
to year. Few smokers realize how com‘plex and great the labor of -making--thefine cigar really is. From the Virginia
Stoga to the heavy Henry Clay, from
Abajo to the veriest Cabbagina each
passes through its own process, of manufacturé and has its own characteristics.
The finest and most valuable cigar tobacco in the world is grown on the island of
Cuba. The district of Vuelta Abajos
takes first rank, then those of the Partidos and Vuelta Arriba. Tobacco grown
in certain sections of the country has
distinct characteristics and special qualities which cannot be duplicated in other
sections. For cigar-making the finest
and most delicately flavored leaves are
used. The highest grades of Cuban cigars are the [egitimas, Vengeras and
Regalias, but being exceedingly high in
price are not found in commerce. They
are contracted for and used by the nobility of Europe. A good domestic cigar
is preferable to a cheap imported cigar.
There is just as poor tobacco raised in
Cuba as in this country, but there they
raise good tobacco in proportionately
larger quantities. In Havana tebacco
you can pick out 50 different kinds ranging from the’ vilest eabbage leaf to the
most fragrant tobaccos in the world, A
cigar that is usually sold over the counter
in this country at two-for a quarter will
cost in Havana $35 per thousand and is
really a poor cigar, and falls far below
the “bit” cigar. To get a good cigar iy
Havana from $60 to $90 per thousand

point to be observed is, pay close attention to quality of goods and let looks,
names, etc., take care of themselves.
The use and effect of tobacco has ever
been a subject for discussion and dissen‘tion. It is generally conceded that the
excessive use of tobacco is injurious, but
used in moderation is beneficial. A few
facts from the opinions of eminent _physicians which were pablished in the London Laneet are here given to show
the concensus of opinion of these whe

than sugar and is antidotal te gluttony.
7. It is a remedy in certain cases for
evils that lie deeper than its own.
8. Smoking, when done at proper
times, facilitates digestion. The sense
of relief obtained by a cigar after a heavy
meal is well knewm to smekers.
9. While the abuse of tobacco weak—
ens the system and leads to emaciation,
used intelligently it exerts a favorable
influence upon nutrition.
Dr. Hammond by observation upon
himself found a gain in weiget with the
use of tobacco. He remarks: ‘‘Tobacco,
when food is sufficient to preserve the
weight, increases it; when insufficient,
and the body is losing, tobacco restrains
the loss,”
% Boerhaave of Holland, over 200 years
ago, referred to tobacco as being antidotal
to hunger. It seems that the power to
undergo severe exertion and fatigue,
either mental or physical, is aided by
tobacco.
There is no disputing the fact that
inany people are slaves to tobacco.
Rev, Der. Lanahan of NewYork@pn

Bishop said he was ineligible because he
used the weed, and declared he would
rather smoke than be a Bishop.
The weed is known to be a great disinfectant and preventive against disease
and contagion. When the yellow fever
was raging at Jacksonville,’ Florida, a
few years ago, cigar-inakers or profuse
users of tobacco were not strigken down
@ th the epidemic and there has never
been a case recorded where a cigar-maker
or twbacco manufacturer has been attacked or succumbed to epidemic dis—
ease. These facts lead us to acknowledge that nicotine is a deadly poison, but
if it will protect us agains) oct ion we
recommend its use. Situations of loneliness are always rendered more tolerable
by its use, and it is the constant come
panion ef those who lead lives of solitude.
