PUBLIC SQUARES. — A Correspondent Complains That They Are Used as Damping Places for Trash. — The TRANSCRIPT has received an anonymous correspondence complaining about people: throwing their rubbish on the public squares of this city, burning up their trash thereon, and cemplaining generally about the use made of them, to the disgust of those living in the immediate neighborhood who are never guilty of anything of the kind, The correspondent also calls attention te the fact that there is now and has been for the past month about three wagon loads of Fast‘ and West Bread streets. It is not the mission of the TRaNscRIPT to attend to such matters. Instead of complained to the City Marshal, who would promptly attend to the matter. The people living in the neighborhood of these places should understanel, however, that there is a city ordinance prohibiting the dumping of debris upon the public squares of the town, and they should not do it. oe A Little Girl’s Experience In A Lighthouse. Food STREET SPRINKLING: es That Matfer Should Bo Atteaded: fo During the Summer. Now that the principal thoroughfares of the city are macadamized, surely it will be necessary to have the streets sprinkled during the summer, else the stores of the city must be kept ctnsed all the time to keep the dust out, and of course this cannot be done during the heated term. The question then arises, who will pay for the sprinkling ? It has been urged on the one hand that the Tiustees should not use the city inoney fo do it, as only four streets out of the forty or fifty would receive any
benefit by such expenditure, and it weuld be doing an injustice to the taxpayers who receive no benefit therefrom. On the other haud, it is urged that the City Trustees should order the sprinkling done, for what benefits ene part of the tewn benefits the whole. At-any rate the streets should be sprinkled, even if it has to be done by subscriptions to pay for it. This subscription business, however, is not satisfactory, for the reason that many, and even those who would receive the greatest benetit-therefrom, are the very onc who will refuse to contribute to the fund. Under this state of affairs, if any sprinkling is done, if the city will net doit, the burden must necessarily fall upon that class known in the community as public-spirited citizens. It is hoped, for the comfort of the people deing business en Broad, Main, J Commercial and Pine streets, that some steps will be taken towards: this sprinkling business. Many rise in the morning with a headache and no inclination tor breakfast. This is due to torpidity of the liver and a deranged condition ef thestomach.
