Visit From a Pioneer.
Dr. John Welch, a wealthy and
“prominent citizen of Portland, Oregon,
.~where he is a dealer in dental supplies,
‘and who is now making a pleasure
--tenr-oef the. State, arrived here Tuesday evening to take a look at one of the
stamping grounds of his youth. He
eame to Nevada City in 1850 (being
then fourteen yearsof age) with his
father, Wm. Welch: The latter and-16}othermen ran the Lawson & Cleveland Tunnel into Wet Hill a distance
of 926 feet, working night and day till
they completed the job. John Welch
finds only about halfa dozen of the
men ofthat time still here. One of
them—J. C. Abbott—went out to Wet
Hill with him Wednesday morning
and Mr. Welch led the way right to
theold tunnel’s mouth, although it
had been thirty-six years since he was
here: He is anxious to find some oldtimers who remember hii and his
St. Patrich’s Festival.
The ladies of Bt. Canice Catholic
Church. were prevented by the bad
’ weather of last month from giving a
party on St. Patrick’s day, as they desired, but now that the conditions aré
once more. favorable and promise to
remain sothey haye decided to hold a
festival at Armory Hall on Wednesday evening, May 28th. ‘The advertisement in another columm gives full
particulars. The event will be a success, for the ladies of that church are
workers and know all about party giving.
A Political Pointer:
It is reported on what appears to be
good authority that Prof.Foster has
~gonsented to take the Democratic nom}
ination for County Superintendent of
Schools. This alleged fact may account for M. P. Stone of the same
town having switched himself off as a
candidate for nomination as Superintendent on the Republican ticket.
The Supreme Court Judges.
With the exception of Justice Work,
whohas gone East for his health, all
the Justices and officers of the State
Supreme Court have returned from
Los Angeles. The next term of the
court will be held. at Sacramento, beginning on Monday, May 5th.

The Doings of the Coming Grand
Council at San Francisco
Outlined, .
The General Committee of Arrange.
ments for the sixth. Grand Council of
the Young Men’s Institute met last
Saturday evening in the Society’s
headquarters, Flood Building, San
Francisco. Grand President Jeremiah
F. Sullivan occupied the chair and tne
meeting was well attended.
The Grand Council will convene in_.
that city on Monday, August 4th, and .
remain in session four or five days.A-very elaborate program has been
mapped out for the occasion, which
will be the most important event in
the Y. M. I.’s history. =
On the morning of the first day the
‘eighteen city institutes will assemble
ata point to be decided on, and march
in procession with the Alameda, Oakland and neighboring branches as escorts to the delegates to St. Ignatius’
Church on ‘Hayes street. A solemn
high thass will be celebrated, and at
the conclusion of the services the
young men will march to B’nai B’rith
Hall where the Grand Council will be
held.
A grand literary and mnsical entertainment will be given in the evening.
-A promenade concert and ball will
be held in the Mechanics’ Pavilion on
the following evening.
The third day’s work will. be pleasantly-brought to a close by a banquet
to visiting delegates. It is expected
that several hundred members of the
society will sit down at table, and that
the feast will be one of the largest everheld inthe city. The Archbishop
will be present and address the party.
After the fourth day’s proceedings
shali have been concluded an excursion will be made around the Bay, and
it is believed this trip will bring the
council to a close.
The Wer id Enriched.
“Phe facilities of the present day for
the production of everything that will
conduce to the material welfare and
comfort of mankind are almost unlimited and when Syrup of Figs was first
produced the world was enriched with
the only remedy whichis truly pleasing and refreshing to the taste and
prompt and effectual to cleanse the
system gently in the Spring time or,
in fact, at any time, and the better it is
known the more pepular it becomes.

Vifoere Snowing is that blood diseases which all other remedies fail
to cure, yield to Ayer’s Sarsaparilla.
Fresh ceonfirmation of this statement. comes to
hand daily. Even
such deep-seated
and stubborn complaints as Rheumatism, Rheumatic Gout, and the
like, are thoroughly eradicated by
the use of this wonJ} derful alterative.
Mrs. R. Irving
Dodge, 110 West
125th street, New
York, certifies ~~
“* About two years ago, after.suffering
for nearly two years from rheumatic
gout, being able to walk only with great
iscomfort, and having tried various
remedies, including mineral waters,
witkout relief, I saw by an advertisement in @ Chicago bgg that a man had
been relieved of this distressing complaint, after long suffering, by taking
Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, I then decided, to
make atrial of this medicine, and took
it regularly for eight months. I am
pleased to say that it effected a complete cure, and that I have since had no
‘return of the disease.”
Mrs. L. A. Stark, Nashua, N. H.
writes: ‘‘One year ago I was taken ill
with rheumatism, being confined to my
house six months. I came out of the
sickness very much debilitated, with no
appetite, and my system disordered in
every way. I commenced to use Ayer’s
Sarsaparilla and began to improve at
once, gaining in strength and soon recovering my usual health. I cannot say
too_much in praise of this well-known
medicine.” :
“T have taken a great deal of medicine, but nothing has done me 80
much good as Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, I
felt its beneficial’ effects before I had
uite finished one bottle, and I can
reely testify that it is the best bloodmedicine I know of.”” —L. W. Ward, Sr.,
