THE ATHLETIC CLUB. “Séml-Atihual Election Members Becoming Proficient, The Athletic Club héld their semiannual meeting last evening. There was alarge and enthusiastic number present. .The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Wm. Giffin; Vice President, E. Baker; Secretary, O. Russell; Treasurer, Geo. Legg: Sergeants at Arms, ©. Tegler, T. Dillonand T, Brown. Two new members were admitted. There has been an increase to the club’s roll of seven members since April Ist. After regular business was transacted the Club adjourned to practice. Tostruction in club swinging, work on the horizontal bar, the use of dumb bells, trapeze and other exercises were gone through with. A great many of the members are becoming very proficient in aérobatic and gymnastic exercise. There is adesire on the part of many citizens to have the—club give an ex-, hibition-in the Theater but the -club does not think it advisable to ‘show up” before Fair week. Last evening’s San Francisco Daily Report says: L. Bowles, President of the Marysville Ditch Company, was arrested this morning*on a warrant déawn up by ex-Justice Julius Reimer and sworn to by Henry, Sutter of 870 Folsom street. It charges defendant with obtaining $500 frem Sutter by false and fraudulent representations, Sutter’s case is typical of nearly 200 ethers in which laboring men have lost their money and laber. The Marysville:Ditch Company was incorporated in San Francisco on January 9, 1890. The articles of incorporation stated that the paid-up stock was $50,000. The fellowing were stockhelders: L. Bowles, $37,400; J. H. Sayre, $2000; H. de Veuve, Jr., $2000; H. de Veuve, Sr., $2000; and various others held etock in small sums. From January 18th till July $1, 1890, the following advertisements appeared in San Francisco morning papers: — " MALE HELP WANTED. $500— Wanted, a good man with thia amount to go to the country as foreman and time’ 7 Wages $60per} month and bourd; investment will make $25-per-month additional; only those having the money and can go to work at once need answer. Address “Carl,’’ box 36, this office. BUSINESS CHANCES. #1000—A good man with this amount (to go te the country, muat invest the:money in a No. 1 compa: y¥ that will pay lerge profits; investent will be secured; salary $100 a onth and beard; duties are foraman and timekeeper. Address‘ ” box 29, this office . ii mEeONE, Sutter alleges in his complaint that he applied to Bowles in response to correspondence initiated by seeing the above advertisements, and that the scheme of the ditch company fwas fully explained, Bowles said that the ‘company had 50,000. shares paid «up, iB 8 and that. it was building a ditch seven-. . teen miles long in Yuba county, which would involve the employment of hundreds of men, five foremen,and also timekeepers. He was hired as foreman and required to deposit $500 as security. He went to Marysville and labored ‘six. months, for which he never received « cont. Then he saw William Clawson, John Smith and Wiliam MecGrayon, other foremen, . and they told him they had received no pay. Shortly afterward he heard: the timekeepers, clerks and.. bookeepers complain-that they had receiv. edno pay. More than 120 Chinese also_workad” many ‘monthawithont pay. Bowles always made a plausible excuse, and the men continued at work, “Then I concluded to. investigate, and found that none of the stockholders were solvent and that they never had-acent above their debts. The company built two miles of the ditch, and lately auepended operations because men would not work longer without pay.
