Mow the Marysville Ditch Company Did tts Work.
Last evening’s San Francisco Daily
Report says: L. Bowles, President
of the Marysville Ditch Company, was
arrested this morning*on a warrant
déawn up by ex-Justice Julius Reimer
and sworn to by Henry, Sutter of 870
Folsom street. It charges defendant
with obtaining $500 frem Sutter by
false and fraudulent representations,
Sutter’s case is typical of nearly 200
ethers in which laboring men have
lost their money and laber.
The Marysville:Ditch Company was
incorporated in San Francisco on January 9, 1890. The articles of incorporation stated that the paid-up stock
was $50,000. The fellowing were stockhelders: L. Bowles, $37,400; J. H.
Sayre, $2000; H. de Veuve, Jr., $2000;
H. de Veuve, Sr., $2000; and various
others held etock in small sums.
From January 18th till July $1, 1890,
the following advertisements appeared
in San Francisco morning papers: —

Sutter alleges in his complaint that
he applied to Bowles in response to
correspondence initiated by seeing
the above advertisements, and that
the scheme of the ditch company fwas
fully explained, Bowles said that the

and that. it was building a ditch seven-. .
teen miles long in Yuba county, which
would involve the employment of
hundreds of men, five foremen, and also
timekeepers. He was hired as foreman and required to deposit $500 as
security. He went to Marysville and
labored ‘six. months, for which he
never received « cont. Then he saw
William Clawson, John Smith and
Wiliam MecGrayon, other foremen, .
and they told him they had received
no pay. Shortly afterward he heard:

excuse, and the men continued at
work,

than $3000. Sutter gave a check on
the Pacific Bank for $500 and worked
six ménths. The company built two
miles of the ditch, and lately auepended operations because men would
not work longer without pay. The
company owed everybdédy connected
with it. --:
Attorney Reimer said this morning:
“They swindled workmen and they
owe thousands of dollars. for proviaions, freight, tents, -hardware, hotel
