THE AMERICAN PARTY,
__vesult. Both the great parties are
_ agitated over the organization
_ which has taken the field, not thet
agit expects to be outvoted by
it, hut it is impossible to tell the
relative strength it will draw from
‘the old parties. Hence the uneasiness manifested in political ci
party, with Wigginton at its head
for Governor, seems to have originated in Fresno county, . Wigginton, who isa Democrat and former member of Congress -from this
State, claims that his supporters
in the San Joaquin valley are
mostly from the Democratic party.
In Oakland a recent canvass seems
« toshow that both parties contribute about evenly to his support.
So far the organization has no beginning except in a few spots, and
is not likely to extend much in
the few days left for the cam.
; Mr. Wigginton is said to be a
fair speaker, and as his doctrines
_-\ @fe somewhat fresh he is likely to
@on, ar m the ovtside, we are
‘to believe that the present American party differs from the old ore
in several very important particulars: No poner Americans, native or foreign, isto be allowed on account of birtb or. religion. All citizens are on the same
plane and entitled to the same,
rights anu privileges. But it holds
that in the interests of American
laborers and good government, a
restriction should be put upon
immigration. Formerly a respectable class came from Europe, ‘but
the worst is generally coming now.
Our sixty millions furnish increase
enough. We have no more land
to give the immigrant. What is
left. of the public domain ought to
be reserved as the patrimony of
the children of nature and foreign
‘born citizens alike. The lot of the
laboring ‘class. is growing harder
and harder year by year. More
the stream of immigration adds to
the number. We cannot assimilate the whole, and our duty is to
take care of ourselves, Such are
some of the arguments used for
the existence of a new party.
The bulk of Wigginton’s supporters regard Pixley as an ultra and
hot representative man of the
party. His assaults upon certain
members of a church are _not_regarded a orthodox, but Pixley
will affiliate for atime with Wigginton, and only for a time. He
cannot be harnessed long to any
Organization that he cannot control. Probably the main reason
the organization and the spirit of]
it as the result of his own teach
It is stated that the supporters
ik of Wigginton are not confined to
native Americans alone, . ut quite
a number of foreign born are impressed With the necessity of bar
ring out the vicious and degraded
elements cast upon our shores and
are joining in the movement. If
it ever gains any momentum a
