FRIDAY EV’'NG, APRIL 28 ‘93
“BVANS AND SONTAG.
Supposed.to Have Been Seen a Few Miles
From This City.
A day or two since J. Morris of this
place and J. Gollober of North Bloomfield were going to the latter place in a
buggy. Near the Yuba river they. saw
a cart in the canyen below the road, and
on looking around saw two men about
200 yards above the road. They were
roughly dressed, one being a -dark ggmplexioned man with long black whiskers,
and the other a light complexioned man,
The cart was a very plain, cethmon Cart,
and leoked as though it had seen much
service,
Frem the descriptions they had read in
the newspapers Messrs. Morris and Gollober concluded that the men were Evans
and Sontag, the noted train-robbers,
whose daring exploits aud hair-breadth
escapes -have been heard of by nearly
everybody. Stopping their team the
men in the buggy consulted as to the
advisability of returning to town and
putting the Sheriff on the track of the
suspects. They deemed it prudent, however, not to show any suspicion, and so
after a good look at the men above and
the cart below they drove straight on.
Mr. Gellober is slightly acquainted
with Sontag, and he is almost confident
that the men above described are the
desperadoes whom the ‘officers have been
so long trying to capture. The cart coi"
responded to the. descriptions published
_of the vehicle used by Evans and Sontag
when they made their last flight from
their home near Visalia, a few days ago,
at which time they slipped through the
_.officers’ hands_.and escaped. unscathed
amidst a perfect shower of. bullets.
Nothing could be seen of the horse, but.
he was probably in the brush feeding.
Whether our local officersintend to
take any steps towards hunting up these
-suspicious-looking-men--we have not
heard,

Yesterday afterndon, says the Union,
a painful and serivus accident occurred
in that city. John Glasson, driver for
Coleman, Glasson & Co., was delivering
. bis last order and was turning the corner
of a lot when. the wheel of the wagon
struck the cro sing with such a force as
to throw the driver ‘to the ground.
Glasson was thrown under the w wagon
and the wheel passed over his head, cutting a large gash in the sealp, and for
the moment rendered him insensible.
Upon recovering consciousness he got up
and ran to Coleman, -Glasson & Co.’s
store, the blood running from the cut in
the head during the whole of that time.
He was immediately taken to the office
of Dr. Jones, who made an ‘examination
and found a cut three inches long over
the left temple and a smaller cut in ‘the
back of the head. Seven stitches were
put in the wound, Glasson standing the
operation bravely. After haying his
wounds dressed he-walked home, . but
was very weak from the loss of blood.
The accident was bad enough as it was,
but it seems almost miraculous that he
escaped with no more serious injuries.
