Second Congressional District.
The Act of March 11, 1891, to divide
thé State of California into Congressional
districts, made radical changes in the
Second Congressional District. Prior to
this the coynty of Sacramento. was included in the Third District, but now it is
in the Second, making the area considerably larger than heretofore. The counties
included new are Butte, Sutter, Yuba.
Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, Amador,
Calaveras, Mono, Inyo, Alpine, Tuolulme, Mariposa, San Joaquin and Sacra. mento. Merced and Stanislaus have been
taken from the Seeond and added to the
Seventh, while Meno, Inyo, Alpine and
Sacramento have been placed in the Secend. The Second District as now constituted gave Markham for Governor in
1890, 22,961 votes and Pond 21,903 votes.
Hand —— Cut.
Telegraph : ‘Thursday evening Walter,
the 4-year-old son of Samuel McCrea, who
lives near the Lime Kiln, had his left
hand nearly severed. The little fellow
and his six-year-old brother were out at
the weod pile. The older brother was
cutting kindling wood with an axe when
the younger brother attempted to grab
the stick. It was all done in play and
the axe struck little Walter across the
hand, tearing the flesh acress the fingers
and nearly severing several of the fingers.
The little sufferer was brought to town
and the doctors found it necessary to cut
off the index finger but think that they
can save the balance of the hand.

THE WRONG VALISE.
A Young Bridegroom'’s, Awful Mistake
a Few Houré Before the Wedding.
It was under circumstances of peculiar
difficulty that Alfred C—— became a
benedict the other day: As the brideelect lived out of town, in one of the
neighboring suburbs, he had arranged to
go to the house of a friend not far away
early in the forenoon. There he was to
dress fur the ceremony, which was to
take place, English fashion, at the little
Village church before 12 o'clock. Sending most of his luggage on ahead, he
put his wedding toggery.in .a hand
valiss (one of those flat soleleather affairs), and bearded the train at the time
#ppointed:
Although naturally a very exact and
methodical person, he was, not unreasonably, rather nervous on this occasion,
and having left his seat to speak toa
friend in the forward part of the car just
back as the brakeman called out the
name of his place of destination, and
seizing what he supposed was his bag as
it lay in an otherwise empty seat, he was
off and away almost before the train had
come to a standstill. Arriving at his
friend's house, he found that there was
an hour ahead of him before it was time
to dress, so he consigned his bag to the
servant—and followed his host into his
“den” to.calm his mind with a good cigar before the momentous event.
But he had hardly made himself com‘ortable before the butler entered witha
sountenance that bespoke an extraordiiary effort to maintain his. gravity.
“Beg pardon, sir, but there must be some
mistake; will you please to see what haricles . found in your bag, sir?’ Quite
“wildered, C——,’ together with his
riend, followed the man upstairs and,
ound neatly ranged on the bed what was
vidently the contents of a drummer's
vag of samples—a cotton ‘union guar:
nent,” child's size; four differént styles
£ braces, a patent seam corset, éight
amples of collar buttons, half a dozen
ties of flaring colors stamped ‘‘correct
style,” and other goods of the ‘same kind.
Of course the explanation was obvious;
ie had taken the wrong bag, and his own
wedding suit was en route for Boston,
without either-bride or bridegroom, on
1 wedding tour ofitsown. Fortunately
his friend was a man of about the same
size, and by borrowing an outfit he was
enabled to reach the church in time and
ao one was any the wiser. The story
leaked out, however, and on his return
from the honeymoon trip he had a lively
ualf hour at his club.—New York Tribane.

looked for than the sudden giving way of
a constitution sapped by everwork, unremitting anxiety or exposure to hardship
and malign climatic influences. Against
the disastrous effects of each and all of
these, Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters is an
effectual safeguard, . . It fortifies the system against them by infusing into it
fresh vigor begotten of renewed and complete digestion and assimilation of the

sickness to posterity. And the majority
of mankind are born sick. So the chief
causes of sickness are continued, and
the tide ot human infirmity flows forever onward.
In civilized life not one woman in five
hundred is fitted for the office of motherhood on account of complaints common
to the sex. This may seem a startling
statement, but it is amply attested by
those peculiarly qualified by extensive
professional tiie Lia to give an opinion.

: Restacrant ; Dummies.
An invention to lighten the labors of
hotel and restaurant waiters has been
perfected by Thomas E. Thompson, of
Chicago. The invention has some points
in common with the parcel railways now
in use in the large dry goods stores and
is to consist of a train of slow moving
ears, which, starting. in and operated
from the kitchen, will make the circuit
of the dining room at,a walking pace.
The cars, which will be. constructed in
long by eight inches wide and will carry .
a tray made to fit them.
‘The waiter, on taking # guest’s order,
two tiers or shelves, will be two feet;
will place a tray on the moving train,
whence it will go direct to the kitchen
to be filled and then returned by the
same route. When used in lenchk coun.
ters the train can be arranged torun under the counter within easy sgach of the
waiter. The motive power will be electricity, and the inventor claims that lis
machine will insure prompt @ervice and
phia Ledger.
Moving Buildlags Across @ Rives.
A block of houses at Lawrenceville,
leghany river to Pittsburg. The undertaking seemed to be difficult, but it was
accomplished. successfully. Tie build
ings were first taken off their Seundations, and turned by jacks and bleks to
@ position at right angles with the river.
Half a dozen sand flatg or floats were
then lashed. together and tied up to the
shore. On.each float three towers of
blocks were built to the height of about
eighteen feet, heavy scantlings were adjusted to the river bank, and by means
of ropes, rollers and pulleys the row of
houses was moved onto the block foun,
dation aGoard the floats. Tugboats were .
next brought into service, aid in due
time the buildings were towed across
new site.—New York Post.
A Lively Election.
According tothe Buenos Ayres Herald,
elections im Argentina are exciting affairs. At! the recent election at Buenos
Ayres policemen armed with swords and
revolvers were placed at all the street
corners, the polling places were occupied with strong detachments of-police,
and policemen armed th rifles were
yosted on the roofs of ad caper pp houses.
Che fire brigade, fully smed, was concentrated in the central po ice department and the troops ef the garrison were
massed just outside the city. Every
citizen elector was armed with a re
volver, and the political clubs swarmed
with men armed with rifles and re
volvers. :
