The South Yuba Water and Mining
Company’s property is located in Placer and Nevada counties, and consists of
real estate, aqueducts, reservoirs, pipe
lines, machinery, etc., costing in cash
over a million and a quarter of dollars.
Besides the above, the company own
inalienable water rights of great vulue
and enhancing every year; also rights
of way which could be purchased now
only at great’ expense.» The main
aqueduct ofthe company has a carrying capacity of about one.hundred and .
thirty million gallons of water daily,
ornearly forty per cent. more than thet
Croton aqueduct which supplies New
York City (95,000,000).
The company’s largest reservoir
holds about eight thousand millions of
gallons of water.
There are in all ten reservoirs, nearly three hundred miles of aqueduct, exe
tensive local supply systems, and all
the necessary details of machinery for
distributing and. measuring water.
More than two thousand acres of +eservoir sites are owned, on which to locate future storage for water, besides
houses of employes, and a large
amount of other lands. The property
is valued at $1,600,000, or about three
times. the amount of the mortgage.
The business of the company consists solely in selling water for municipal and. domestic -\p rposes, for irrigation; and to furnish power to, drive
machinery and electric plants. Asthe
population increases, the demand
grows, and all water properties in Califurnia are yearly raising in value.
No rain falls for five months, but the
extensive storage of the South Yuba
Company enables it to supply customers throughout the year.
The system which is about to beadded to the company’s property extends
from the foothills to the Sacramento
Valley. The company’s aqueducts
death and. burial and is called Great
or Holy Week, or the week of the Passion. Its observance as a period of
special religious ceremony is of the
greatest antiquity, being spoken of by
Treneous, who flourished towards the
end of the second century.
THE OFFICE OF TENEBRAE,
Which is rendered in all the collegiate
and cathedral churches of the Catholic faith, is considered one of the
. most impressive relgious ceremonies
inthe Roman Ritual. It is ¢hanted
on the evening of Spy Wednesday.
At the beginning of the Tenebrae
thirteen lighted candles are placed on
a triangular candelebra and at, the
end of each psalm one is extinguished
till only asingle candle is left lighted
at the top of the triangle.
During the singing of the Benedictus
the waxen tapers on’ the High Altar
are extinguished, while at the antiphon after the Benedictus the candle
left alightis hidden behind the altar
tohe brought out again atthe end of
the office. This ceremony /of extiuguishing the lights, says Amalarnis
Fortunatus, who wrote in the year
820, A. D., figures the growing darkness when Christ, the Jight of the
world, was put to death.
\ON HOLY THURSDAY
But one solemn mass can be celebrated, when white vestments must be
used in memory of the institution of
the Blessed Eucharist by the Savior
at the last supper:before. Hie ¢rucifixion. At the ‘‘Gloriain Excelsis Deo”’
the bells are rung, but do not sound
again until Holy Saturday. At this
mass the consecrating priest consecrates two hosts, one of which is placed
in a chalice and carried in solemn procession to a place prepared for it, commonly called the Altar of Repose,
which is decked with fragrant flowere

ON GOOD FRIDAY
The Church commemorates the sorrowful Passion of Christ, so-that is the
mst sad of all the days in Holy
Week. The officiating clergymen appear in black vestments, prostrating
themselves before the altar. No
lights are used. After a short pause
the history of the Passion is read from
8t. John’s Gospel. Next prayers are
said for all the members of the
hierarchy and for the prosperity of all
Christian people. After the prayers
whefe water has thus been artificially are ended the cross, which had been
covered, ig now exposed to view and
the clergy and lay people reverently
kiss the embelm of man’s redemption.
During this-touching ceremony the
choir sing the-words: “My people,
what have I done to thee? Wherein
have . vexed thee? Answer me.’’
On this day the Church does not celebrate mass throughout the whole
world, the ceremony being what is
designated the Mass of the Presanctifled. The Blessed Sacrament is borne
from the Altar of Repose to the High
Altar inprocession, during which the
choir sing the hymn ‘‘Venilla Regis,”
when the officiating priest celebrates
the remainder of the sacred service.
HOLY BATURDAY
Is the last day of Holy Week. The
ceremonies of this day begin early in
the morning with the blessing of the
new fire struck from flint, from which
a candle with three stems and placed
on a reed is lighted and carried up the
center of the church by the whiterobed priest. The same symbolism
Candle, in which the priest places five
grains of incense in memory of the
five wounds of the Savior, and the
precious spices: with which he was
anointed in the tomb.
THE UBE OF PASCHAL CANDLES,
Is spoken of by Pope Zosimus in 417
A. D. and is symbolical of the gloriows
light with which Christ Jlumined the
world, “‘O God who didst this most
holy night‘with the glery. of the Lord’s
Resurrection,” is sung in the preface
of the mass of thiaday. The ceremony
of blessing the baptismal; next takes

The Ability to BearPatin
Is the test of fortitude among the Ivdian tribes. But we defy any Cherokee, Sioux or Comanch to endure the
twinges of rheumatism without wine
ing. These, indeed, are slight at first,
but grow inintensity untill they become unbearable. No malady is more
obstinate in. its maturity than that
which gives rise to them. The more

is Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, safer
and infinitely more effective than colvhicum, veratrum and nux vomica, all
remedies which might prove destructive of life in a slightly excessive doge,
Mineral depurents, also, when not
positively misvhie vous, are far inferior
in remedial power to this salutary botanic: medicine, It. entirely expells

To the Stockholders of the Nevada

Company: :
Gentlemen: The report of your Secretary and Auditor, forthe year ending
Doe. 31, 1889, shows that the reccipts
for that year, hve fallen off from the
preceding year to the amount of $4,238.20, It is scarcely necessary for
me to give the reason of this decrease
‘ta husiness, as you are well aware that
it has resulted from a general stagnation of business from the same causes
given in my reports of the previous
two
The operating exponses are an increase over the preceding year of $13,226.95, and are caused principally by
the uee of that amount of material, remaining in hand at the close of the
plates, spikes and ties.
A great deal of the old iron rail;that
has been replaced with steel has been
loaned to O. W. Kitts, and used by
him in the construction of his branch
road intersecting our line at Greenhorn creek. This road of Mr. Kitts is
for the transportation of wood and
lumber, and as it taps a fine body of
timber will unquestionably add materially to the.revenue of our road,
It ia underatood that parties from
Scotland have purchased on the line
ofthe N.O. N. @. R, R. near Grass
Valley, a site for areduction works,
for the working of ores and sulphurete,
and will shortly erect a new and costly plant thereon, thus materially increasing the freight revenue of, our
During the paat year, permanent improvements have been made, in the
alignment of the road, in the station
grounds at Grass Valley, and by erecting thereon a atone’ blacksmith shop,
and by relaying two miles of ‘the road
with ateel rail.
Respectfully submitted,
