GIVE THEM A SHOW.
Doos Not Think Pavorably of the Proposed
New Reduction Works.
It is getting to be a regular chestnut
of reduction works being built to work
refractory ores from Meadow Lake. We
would like to see some one’ work the
ores, but let them try it where they have
works in operation beforé building and
then having to fail. It was only’a short
while ago a reduction plant was built in
this place ind turned out to be a failure,
and such failures gives a black eye to a
city, to outside capital.—Grass Valley
Telegraph. ‘
The parties who have the new mill
and process referred to by the TransOrIrt the other day had two or three
tons of Meadow Lake ore shipped’ East a
few years ago and claim to have worked
it with most satisfactory results. One
of the gentlemen interested in the Phila~
delphia works visited Meadow Lake personally and had the ores sent on for
treatment. The idea_that because certain processes and certain companies
have failed in their _attempts_to work
refractory ores, others are doomed to a
similar fate, is a silurian view of the
matter, There are failures in every line of
business or occupation, but that does not
deter other men from following these
pursuits and meeting with success, and
sogt is in the matter of mining and milling processes,
Past failures in.the working of Meadow
Lake ores has certainly made: capitalists
timid about investing in the distri¢t, but
this fact does not warr.nt the throwing
vf cold water on any new plan or process
that is claimed will extract the precious
metals from the ore. Mr, * Carter’s process not ouly extracts the gold, but the
sulphuric acid gases are condensed and
saved, as well as the red oxide of iron
where it exists, both of which produets
are valuable and have formerly been
illowed to escape.
There seems to be no question about
the Meadow Lake ores containing gold
in paying quantities, provided the same
cau be extracted by some economical pro
cess, and this is just what Mr. Carter
claims he canto, the may fait, but tilt

The Storm.
We doubt if ever a more severe storni.
occurred in this section in the month of
April than that which prevailed last night
From 6 o'clock P, m. till 8 o'clock this
morning it raged with the fury of.a
storm in mid-winter. Torrents of rain
fell, the strong wiad driving it in great
sheets and adding to its fierceness. At
11 o’cleck snow began falling, and in a
short time the ground was covered
There was a mixture of snow and rain
from that heur till morning, when the
snow had full sway or a time, reaching
a depth of about an inch, when there was
a lull in the storm. From present indications, however, itis not over yet,

shows that the Auburn amateurs run

A WHISTLING WELL.
The Phenomenon Possessed by a Red
Bluff. Ranch
Before the Academy of Sciences last
evening, says the San Francisco Bulletin,
W. L. Watts of the Mining Bureau told
of water supply investigations in the
Sacramento Valley. Said he:
‘In Tehama and Glenn counties I have
discovered wells which have served to
convince me that the subterranean currents have a direot bearing on the water
supply of the valley. Instead of under.
ground caverns containing gases they are
filled with air, whichis forced in and out
according to ‘the state of the weather.
Upon the ranch of E. Fish, situated’ two
miles east of Red Bluff, I found a well
less than. 100 feet in depth which seemed
te have an unusual underground connection.
“Just previous to a rain or stormy
weather a current of dool air arises from
some cavern opened’ by the well. So
strong is the rush of air that when I
covered the pump se as to cause the wind
to escape through a small tube, a whistle
which I attadlied was blown with a sound
that cam be heard a mile, In fair
weather the well has a suctien which
will draw any light object toward it.
On investigation I found that there was
a0 gas in the air about the well, All at= Pe aie ea Pea 9
