“ SUPERVISOR» A erneary:
Te What Extent Does It Extend
im County Work?
A case waa brought before the Supréme Court Saturd sy last, on a writ
of habeas corpus, which 1s intended to
settle, toa certain extent at least, the
‘queztion of autlority of Supervisors in
certain cases wherein work is ordered
done for the county, A Judge of the
Superior Court.ordered work done in
fitting up his courtrooms, to the amount
of $1,867, without consulting the Board
of Supervisors, and when the bills fut
said work were presented duly certifled to by the Judge the Treasurer refused to pay it on the grounds that
county work must be orlered by the
Bupervisors, whicn in this case had
not been done. The Judge then had
the Treasurer adjudged guilty of contempt-of-court fur refusing to pay the
billg and he wis remanded to the custody of the Sheriff. ‘Ihe Treasurer
then got a writ of h.ibess corpus froin
the Supreme Court, and the main questien to adjudge bim-guilty of contempt
will also carry with it the question of
the autliorit ty of the Judge to order
work done for'the county, without the
authority of the Board of Supervisors.

stated that he believed by government aid the hydraulic branch of the
industry could be prosecuted in a
manner that would not entail injury
upon the lands lying below the gravel
regions,

OUR lives must be measured by
moments. Little things make
up the total of human happiness

THE CODLIN MOTH.
The Best Methed of Exterminating thie Pest.
and Pear Trees.’”? The most effective
method of getting rid of the codlin
moth seems to be to spray with paris
green. The best results are obtained
by mixing one pound of paris green to
160 gallons of water, a flour-paste so as
tomake_the water quite milky having
first been mixedin. ‘The paris green
is diluted cimply with water, this being
preferable to diluting with ammonia.
The spraying should be done the first
time when tlie petals have pretty near
dropped from the blossoms, For fungus or black scab, dry sulphur is effective. Forsome parts of the State
two sprays of kerosene emulsion during the sumi.er will insure good fruit,
and the same wash for the brown apricot scale is alsd good. For all leafeating worms paris green is effective,
as it is for the cedlin moth. Attention during the summer and frequent
spraying’ was recommended _ rather
than wholesale winter treatment. It
isa mistake to give up spraying and
‘trust who'ly tothe parasites to do the
work,
A-general discussion ensued and a
variety of methods were suggested of
