IN NO MAN'S LAND.
Two shapes were walking on the strand
One starlitnight in no man’s land;
Two shapes that during earthly life
Gave-hate for hate in deadly strife,
They met. Swift forth their fatchions flew;
Kach pinned the other through and through;
Yet neither fell. Again they strove
For niastery, and madly drove
Taright and left their falchions bright,
Nor sound nor ery profaned the night.
Through corselet, casque and Vigor, too,
As through the air their swift blades flew:
Until amazed, they stood aghast,
And on the sands their weapons cast.
Then laughed they both at mortal strife,
The passing dream of earthly life:
Ande laspinig each the othe r, ,) hand,
They walk the shades of no man's land.

As good an instance of New York wit

the Roosevelt bhospitpl A dangerous
operation was being performed upon a
woman. Old Dr. A——, @ quaint German, full of kindly wit'and professional
enthusiasm, had several younger doctors
with him. Oud of them was administering the ether. He became so interested in the old doctor’s work that he
withdrew the cone from the patient's
nostrils, and she half roused and rose to
a sitting posture, looking with wild eyed
amazeinent over the surroundings. It
was a critical period and Dr, A-~— did
not want to be interrupted.
“Lay down dere, voman,” he commanded gruffly, ‘You haf more cwriosity as a medical student.”
She lay down and the operation went
