The Mackaye Spectatorium.
—
Among the many innovations in stage
appliances which are being made by the
Columbian Celebration Company, at
“The Mackaye Spectatorium” Chicago, .
perhaps none is more novel than that
which is designated by a hitherto unknown condition. Liberally trarislated
the word ‘‘Luxauleator” means, a curThe purpose of this new
device is to veil the stage from view of
the audienee without the use of a curtain
or without darkening the audience
chamber of the building. The audience
sees a portion of the appliance used, this
portion being a single rew of incandescent electric lamips, (placed at the apex
of conical shaped reflectors turned base
toward the audience), which are placed
all around and close to. the. edge of the
proscenium opening. The. theory on
which it works is exceedingly simple and
depends merely on the fact that the eye
cannot readily accustom itself to changed
conditions of light. When the Luxauleator is not in use one has a view of the
stage the same as under ordinary conditions, but when the Luxuleator switch is
turned on and the lamp glow with a tre-/
menodus voltage of electricity, the eye
cannet grasp the change and sees nothing but the lamps; the quick change
having the effect of making the rectangle,
enclosed by these, lamps, ‘appear dark.
It is the same asif one stood in a brightly
lighted room and attempted_to look
through a window into the darkness
without; the stage lights being turned
