An Eye For Business
The following letter from a resident
of this city has been sent to the leader
of the ‘‘flce to the mountains’’ movement: Mrs. Wadsworth or Wood‘worth, Oakland, Cal.—Dear Madam:
I see from newspaper accounts that a
large number of “people of Oakland,
Alameda ond San’ Francisco inténd
closing of the hydraulic miines, causing a large namber of people to leave
here for other parts, there are a large
number of.vacant houses, and the rent
forthe same is very cheap. You can
inform your followers at your next
meeting that any number of houses, . <
good ones, containing from five to nine
per month. Provisions, groceries, etc.,
can be purchased here almost if not
quite as cheap asin San Francisco.
Should’any of your followers conclude
to come this way, they will surely find
it a very pleasant place in which to
reside. Yours-very-traly,--—-———

A Sticcessful Entertainment.
The ertlertainment given at the
Union Hotel Monday evening was oné
of the best that bas at any time taken
place here under the auspices of local
talent. The program as heretofore
published*was faithfally carcied out in
Howell’s farce-comedy of ‘‘The Mousetrap’? was charniingly presented by
the six young ladies and the gentleman who werein the cast, the lines
being invested with u vim that made
it excruciatingly funny, and the reality
of the performance was maintained by
the well-appointed stage that was provided. The audience was gratifyingly
large, the spacious dining room being
thronged. At, the conclusion of the
musical and literary features there
was a dance, and many people remained to enjoy it. The door receipts
were close to $90.
The young ladies to whom the entire credit of originating and couducting the entertainment is due, s¥@ entitled to the highest praise for their
efforts.
