Waters copies the following extruct into the Daily Hotel Gazette at San Francisco and thea says what is appended: Lost, on July 4th,on the road between Nevada Vity and Grass Valley, a stiff hat, marked inside “CO, Herrmann & Co., San: Francisco.”’. Please return to Theo. Wilhelim’s market, Grass Valley. This advertisement, which I find in a recent issue of a valued exchange, should be a. warning to patsiotic gentlemen not to wear stiffh.tson Fourih ef July and other convivial occasions which are likely to result in enlarged heads. A yielding felt hat which will stretch itself to meet the exigency of a Fourth-of-July head, is the proper thing. This precaution will obviate the necessity of carrying the hat in the hand, from which (in the obliviou-ness natural to the occasion) it is almost certain to be dropped. { hope that my Grass Valley and Nevada City friends will read this note of warning and apply it vo their advan—— . tage next Christmas and New Year’s days, and thus suve their families and friends the pain of perusing such telltale advertisements an that given above. The owner of the lost stiff hat has, to be sure, wisely suppressed his name, but his identity can hardly be concealed successfully in a 4000-peopled town of 1000-zorsip power. l am sorry to deprive the valued exchange aforesaid of this line of paying ‘‘ads,” but ite respected editor may, andI trast will, find more than an equivalent in the price of the hat he might have lost bat for this wise and timely counsel : Fn . A patient asked about taking Joy’s Vegetable Sarsaperille, As sarvaparillas usually contein mercury or iodides I objected, and asked for the formula, which finding purely vegetable, end so mild as to be to my mind almost inert; I consented. Imagine my astonishment when perfect laxative action was re . ported. It has two great points. First, being purely vegetable, it is (unlike mercury) not cumulative ip the system, being easily carried off by the digestive processes; and second, it ig effective with a less quantity of the cathartic principle than has hitherto been attainable, It in this respect ranks as @ discovery, and approeches the ideal, yis,: the least medicine consistent with the great sei cua porart nlte od est both the pv and the pro ‘ ACITY PHYSICIAN OF THIRTY YEARS’ PRACTION, San Francteco Examiner, March 10, 1890. Young LET THEM Ge. ae mest ‘men. Beiabine ct the encampment to be held at Santa Cruz next week by the militiamen of thid city and the other companies of the First Artillery Regiment, N. G.C., the Record-Union . Says editorially : It is to be hoped that employers will uccommodate the men so wéll that every enlisted and commissioned maninthe regiment will be able to attend the encarpment. ‘Th abnual outings are very beneficial the young men, for they are betier equipwhen they return. Getting out of the “‘groove’’ for a few days rests them to such’ an extent that they take hold of work on their return with new vigor and greater interest in it, and-really do mach to equalize the loss of time. Aside from these considerations, the holiday of the employe is very nearly.a-right, so much a custom has it become to allow wa;e-earners a few days each summer in which to seek change of scene and air. But the considerations relaling directly to the organized militia are also important. It is essential that the National Guard of California shall be maintained in as high a_state of efficiency as can be attaified. It is an arm of Government every wise man should foster, andin aid of which taxpayers expend no mean sum, and canwell afford to expend a great deal more The regiments of the guard eapnot be well trained and disciplined in street orarmory. They must be taken into the tented field and given a glimpse of camp life, and some idea of the duties, trials and privileges of the soldier of the republic. Between. orderly government and lawlessness there is only the arm of the official, and that must lean: upon the organized militia, at least. The athers did not tire of preaching tous in the addresses they left forour guidance of the value of. a well-‘lisciplined militia to the State as an arm of protection and a bulwark of liberty. In case of invasion, revolution or local resistance of the law, it -is to the men bedring the arms of the State, and serving, her without fee or reward, that the communities of the Union mnetturn for protection. The guard, too, is a school in patriotism. There is no danger of over-cultivation of the jatter-among-a peopie so intelligent as those of the American republic. On the contrary, it is not enough stumuwe the regiment will be sent away with very iull ranke, and that not one man who is in employment will be prevented by any employer from serving the State snd doing himself good by the recreation referred to us member ofthe Regiment. ; i Moe. Last year I dried 15,000 pounds of prunes, my own and what I bought on tie tree. I got 6,309 pounds of the d-ied-article which [sold for 6 cents. Idipped the green fruit in hot lye water (6 pnunad lye to ten gallons of watér) and then rinsed in clear water. This softens the skin, gives a better color and quickens the drying process: Last year I paid $20 ton for prunes on the tree.
