What Judge Searls Thiuks of “the Preseut and Future of Nevada City. The reporter of the TRaNscRIPf rap across Judge Searls this afternoen and tried to get an :nterview with him upon various subjects,. but failed to reach the points intended, om acceunt of so many interruptions by people who wanted to welcome him back home again, even if it waz only on a visit. «Well, Judge,” said the reporter, **do yu notice any change about the, town oF people since you left! a » ‘* Well, now,” said the Judge, ‘*it 4s simply astonishing to me to note the improved appearance ef the buildings, walks and streets since my .last visit. When T went away the town had the appearance of being in the last stages of consumption. A large number of stores in the business. part of the town were vacant, any number of houses tenantless,, and it really seemed to pie asif their owners -were wishing an earthquake would come along and finish their destruction. Now: everything is changed as if by magic. stores, ] hear there are no vacant houses and that there is a great demand for them. The pew concrete walks, the newly painted buildings, ‘the macadamized streets, the happy people I meet, all leads me to believe that a very marked change has taken place, and it makes me feel happy to see these positive evidences of prosperity on every, hand. Since { have.been here I have been informed that there are more miners empleyed here now than at,any previous time in twenty years. And further that if three or four other mines are started up, which promise to be in the near future, your population must necessarily be very largely increased and greater prosperity than ever _-will-reign-here.I believe it is_a_matter of only a few years when you will see your population deubled, or even thribbled, and _property not only within the corporate limite but-outside of it, commanding very high I see no vacant Engineer of the Volunteer Fire Department of le — This City — ‘To the Heéuorable Board of Fire Delegates of Nevada City: GEntLEMEN—I herewith submit my report for the term beginning August Ist, 1892, and ending August 7th, 1893. Nevada City has passed a year, which is seldom equaled by amy town of its size, with less loss from destruction by tire. Providence and good work by the Fire Department on June 2ith, 1893, saved what might haye been a great destruction of a The Firemen are alportion of our town. ways ready to respond at the tap of the fire alarm; they are ready and willing as volun— teers to face the fiery elements. Nearly all are thoroughly competent for the work as— signed them, and ‘thecontinued freedom from large and disastrous conflagrations, where threatening fires have started, speaks louder than words as to the efficiency of the Firemen. : g CASUALITIES They have escaped, with the exception of al few slight bruises while on duty, from any serious accidents. FIRE ALARMS. During the past year there have been sixteen fire alarms. Twelve alarms were caused by burning chimneys avd brush. Four alarms were of no importaice. The following have been the most exten— sive: November 2, ae Barn and other outbuildings, owned by W. G. Richards and others, situatetl between Broad and Spring streets. Cause of fire unknown. April 9, 1833. The building and furniture owned and occupied by Mr.Meacham, on Piety Hill: Cause of fire unknown. May 8, 1893. Damage to the building occupied by Solari, at the foot of Broad street.__Cause of tire unknown. Cause of fire supposed to be incendiary. _ Total less during the year eoding August _— Can Be Made, =. — Joseph Schuster of San Francisco has purchased the McCoy property, en Wood's ravine, and the deed was filed today. The property consists of a large tract of land and two, dwelling houses. : In this transfer is included the North Merrifield quartz: mine, upon which’ but little work has Leeu done, but enough to demonstrate that when properly opened up it will be a big mine: It adjoins the Nevada City niine. means apd push to develop the property, and we understand he will form a company, incorporate immediately and start work upon the mine, { New Process for: Saving Fine and Float : Gold. Jobn A. Ewen, an assayer from Sau Franciseo, was in Grass Valley yesterday, says the Tidings, with a new scheme for saving fine and float gold, and which he claims will work roasted salphurets up to a higher per centage than chlorination, with one-quarter the expense’of that process. It is espec— ially adapted. for working placers containing flour gold which it is impossible to save by existing processes, and it seems to us te have considerable merit. It is not applica ble to mills doing wet crushing, as the process is entirely dry, but he claims with dry sta.nping he can save more gold then any existing process, and abselutely without loss of quicksilver. Brietly described it is as follows: The machine consists of an-iron tank containing quicksilver, in which revolves an iron «drum directly under the hopper. The dry ore'or sand being fed through the hopper, it drops upon the drum ina thin layer, “to the surface of which it -adheres, as the drum is. wetted by a sprinkler directly in front of the hopper. The drum carries this prices. The people here ought te be; and I believe they are, the’ happiest ou God's green eurth.” a : <-Atthis.paint.the reporter’ gave Up all hopes‘ of further interviewing the Judge on account of. the numerous interruptions by le who wanted te talk to him. Here, running sores formed which would scab over, but would break immediately on moving the leg. My mother tried everything she could think of, but all [was without avail, Although a child, Iread in the papers about the beneficial effects of Ayer’s Pills, and persuaded my mothber to let me try them. With no great faith in the result, she procured Ayer's Pills and I began to use them, and soon noticed an improvement. Encouraged by this, I kept on till I took two boxes, when the sores disappeared and have never troubled me since.” —H.
