A Grass Valley Company Makes Application to Be Listed. ~ Tn the San Francisco Call of Wednesday we find the following: The South Idaho Mining Company of Grass Valley has applied to be placed on the list of the San Francisco Stock Exchange. This is one of the most promising mines in Nevada county and is on the same ledge as the Idaho, which has paid so many thillions of dollars in dividends. A very important strike.was.made°in’ the mine a ‘few weeks ago, over $5,000 being taken out in one piece of rock. : Oe Are You Nervous, ee Are you all tired out, do you have that tired‘ feeling or sick headache? You can be relieved of all these symptons by taking Hood's Sarsaparilla which gives nerve and bodily strength. Hoop’s Pris are easy in action, Our Climate. People who have lived in Nevada county a long time are apt to forget that we have about the finest climate in the world. The altitudes and the surroundings of the towns of Nevada City and Grass Valley render ‘this section particularly desirable at all seasons. _ In the extreme lower. portion of the county the winter season is'remarkably mild, but the Summer weather is quite hot, while in the uppermost portions of” thé county the winters aré very severe and the summers as mild and balmy as the early springtime. in the lower portions. -Residents of the county.who.go eleewhere ueon~notice the difference in climate and can then appreciate the advantage we possess in this respect. Hon. J. M.~Walling, who has gon, says from the time he left the county until he got back the weather was miserable. From San Francisco te Oregon aud during hia stay in the latter place he says he thought he would freeze te death, and he longed for the pleasant sunshine and soft breezes of Nevada county: Tuterésting Sparring Contest. — — Ther’ was a large audience at the Nevada City Athletic Club's gymaosiam lastnight} ~ to witness the four-round ‘boxing contest between J, Jefford,°the Montana wonder, and James Brannigan, boxing instructor of the club, It was an exciting and very interesting display of scientific boxing, with honors about evenly divided. Jefford weighs 190 pounds and stands 6 feet 114 inches, aud bas a reach as great as Peter Jackson, . He is a perfect specimen ef manhood, James Brannigan weighs 160 pounds and is 5 feet 10 inches, He is a well-developed young man and a very quick, easy sparrer. J. McClure attended to the wants of Jetford, while Professor Hartman waited on Brannigan. The club will give a series vf © gentlemen nights’ this winter, when nothing but-sparring and wrestling will take place. + 7@er -— Steam up! Telegraph: —The sounds ‘of the steam whistle at the works of the old Centennial, announcing the reopening of that mine, was wafted to us at one o’clock Thursday. J. N. Larkin, President of the Sacramente company, pulled the wire of the’ ‘*howler” and at the same time expressed the wish tat the ‘‘music” could be heard at the Capital city. Judging from the records of the past, we prophecy that the results of the “shreeks” will be heard in that city in the near future, How Is Your Eyesight? T. THE HOME MINE. — The Preseat Owners Intend to Open the Prop. erly ona Big Scale, —— Yesterday morning Charles Stepp and Johan Fischer, of San Francisco, two of the Jargest owners in the Home quartz mine, arrived in this city for the purpose of completing arrangements to work the mine on as large a scale as it is possible to do, Stephen Moore, a first-class quartz miter, is in charge of the inine, Men are now rushing the preliminary work, and the gtading and foundation for the new hoisting works is about completed and the building -will be erected immediately. It is.the intention of the new company te put on all the men that can be worked to advantage, right from the start, increasing the force as room is made for more men, and we would not be surprised to learn within sixty or ninety days that they have a big crew of men employed there, The Home is considered a good mine by those who are posted regarding the work that was done there many years ago. It is situated on’ Deer creek, just below the Champion mine, but the hoisting works are to be erected on the opposite side of the creek, below the Providence. Years: ago this rine was owned by Thomas Findley, the Grass Valley banker, Some very fine rock was taken out, equalling in richness any of the quartz ever found in the Nevada City mine: Findley had other business to occupy his. attention in those days, and after working the mine awhile he suspended Operations. The property finally passed into other hands and has never been worked since. It is now in the hands of just the right kind of mem that. are most desirable in this district. They believe in working the mine on a big scale, and have the coin te carry out their plans. There is hardly a doubt that they have a good -property and that when properly developed it will prove te be one of the best-paying mines in the district and will ‘add. to the prosperity of our'town aswell aa to the purses of its owners, ‘ Mrs. T. A BIG FIRE. — Hundreds of Acres of Timber-land Destroyed During the Past Few Days: For some days past the clouds of smoke that have risen at the eastward indicated that forest fires were doing a great deal of damage in that direction, From Henry Fuchs, who was on the acene of the hre last hight, aays the Tidings, and helped to fight the flames, we learn the following particulars, The fire is a continuation of the fire that swept across the Narrow G uage railroad at Melarkey crossing and a part of the White ranch, about a week ago. The fire proceeded gradually across tracts of land belonging toa number of different parties, and then swept over about 1300 acres of tim: ber land belonging to M. Manion. It. then passed to the property known as the Fuchs ranch—now owned by Geo. M. Mott and other Sacramento men. It was raging fiercely on this place last night, and twenty men were engaged in fighting the flames, At this ranch there were $26 cords of oak wood, which the fire threatened to destroy ad which the flames may have reached by this time, . In the neighborhood of Hunt's Hill, a score or more of Chinamen are engaged in fighting the fire. Mr. Fuchs says the fire extended from Little Greenhorn to Big Greenhorn, It has burned in a zig-zag course a territory, some five or six miles in length, and is still progressing, Strength and Health, If you are not feeling strong and healthy, try Electrie Bitters, If ‘La Grippe” has left you weak and weary, use Electric Bitters. This remedy acts directly en the Liver, Stomach and Kidneys, gently aiding those organs to perform their functions, If you are afflicted with Sick Headache,’ you will find speedy and permanent relief by taking Electric Bitters, One trial will eonvince you that this is the remedy you need.
