Another Big Forest Fire Near French Corral. About ten o’clock Monday morning a five originated in a Chinese cabin at the S$! de quartz mine on the South Yuba river a mile and a half southeast of French Corral and spread rapidly toward the town, burning over portions of the ranches of A. R. Dahlberg, H. Baron and C PD. Miller, but fortunately being kept out of the town by a ravine and a ridge the latter of which is covered with green manzanita brush. — Yesterday ‘the fire went from the South-Ynba_up over the hill in a_north“westerly direction, between ~French Oorral and Shady Creek and towards the farms of E, ©. Fisher and A. G. Dart. On the northeast corner of the town there are worked out miniag claims that the fire cannot cross. Santa Crvuz, August 11, 1891. Eprror Transcrrpt—The Firat Artillery Regiment is doing itself proud in its’ present annual encampment. Of course the officers are entitled to great credit for the excellence of the arratigements, but much depends upon the behavior of the rank and file, for if the boys were inclined to be at all ‘‘ornery”’ it would take off all the luster that now adorns the camp and. makes it one of the very finest of the year according to the residents here who are well’ qualified to pronounce an opinion because they have seen so much of the citizen soldiery during the last few years. ONE OF THE FINEST, Perhaps it woul.l be in a little better taste for me to leave such a saying to some outsider; but the truth. never yet did any lasting harm, and Iam going to remark that the Regiment is in all it: essential parts one of the best attached to the National Guard of California. Its membera are men of respectability and intelligence, such as capable mechanics, enterprising workera in mercantile lines, ambitious miners and farmers, men wh: rank high inthe professions, etc. The hoodlum element which infests the mili tia to some degree in certain parts of the effete Kast is not present in the Reginent of which the Nevada City Company is one of the most important factora. WORK AND FUN. We are having a good lot of routine work to do every day, a3 I pointed out in my letter of yesterday; but we are not languishing socially. Today the dress parade passed off well and was highly complimented by all who witnessed it. Last-night, at the Pacific Ocean House which is the swell hotel of the town, W. J. MecCullom, the landlord, and hi charming better half tendered a reception co the officera of the Regiment, and the Regimental Band played again. ONE SOLDIER FALLS. Private Whitford, who was prostrated Sunday by the rigors of the trip down from Nevada City, is all right again. He was the firat inmate» of the hospital, but he did not have to stay there very long. VISITING NOTABLES, Among the notables here are Signal Officer Major Shérburn and Captain Day who is his aide-de-camp, also Colonel Murray from whom the camp gets its name. General Sheehan and his staff will come the latter part of the week. NEWS FROM HOME, The Transcript is in great demand these days. We don’t exactly fight for it, but as we are all more than anxious to keep posted on the doings. at home we wait for our respective turhg to read the six or eight copies that come with a good deal more impatience than we wait for the summons to rations. PRIVATE MORGAN MISSED, We miss private Morgan more than you can imagine. It isa pity that he could not tear himself away for eight short days from his new-found love that the Transcript has been’ creating so much excitement about. Not less than seven of the Sacramento ‘‘sojers’’ now here were among the long list of men who applied for her by writing to Morgan, and they swear by their dashed hopes that if they ever lay hand on him they will use him for wadding in their muskets and will shoot hiin into space so far he will never come back to play another such a trick on them. I'll bet it was the fear of being so punished that kept Jim at home. One of the boys (whom I will call Strawfoot) who promised yesterday to help me keep the TRANscripr posted has justhanded in a bunch of items, I send them along for what they are worth. Hayvoor, Strawfoot’s Items. Captain Nihell is the youngest man of his rankin the Regiment, but he is also one of the most efficient. Peterson of North Bloomfield and T. P. Bennett, the well-known proprietor of a livery stable in this city, left Marysville about 8 : 30 o'clock Saturday night with the remains of N. J. Lund, the young man whohad died in this city. After passing Shoemate’s saloon on the Hedge’s grade, .a young man coming from an opposite direction rode up, and warned them not to go on, as two men had stopped him at the railroad crossing at Yuba Station, and demanded him to throw up his hands. He said he had a narrow escape, as he was riding along leisurely at the time, and that‘one of the men caught hold of his horse’s bridle and tried to throw him off his feet, and that it was with difficulty he got away. Bennett is anything but a coward, sohe asked the young man, who is a ranch hand, to ride back to Shoemate’s and borrow a pistol for him. The young man soon returned with the “‘life preserver,’ and Mr. Bennett proceeded on his journey. Atter crossing the railroad track two men stepped out and demanded-that he throw up his hands. Mr. Bennett was not in the least put out, and coolly replied that he-was not. built that way, at the same timne pointing his gun at the head of the nearest man. The two footpads saw they had a determined man to deal with, and they quickly took their departure. Mr. Peterson had about $100 in: his pockets and must. have felt a little nervous. One of the men was dressed in a light suit, and the otheg#vore dark clothes, but it was so dark at the time that it was not easy to distinguish their features. Those cold-blooded footpads who \wanted to rob the driver of a dead wagon are supposed to be still in this vicinity. We're Missourians. Why do —-you-~ ask?” Well,” said the drummer, ‘‘your sign up there says so." “The landlord looked up and said, as he scratched his ear, “Well, dod rot that Yankee peddler; he wold that to us for a Latin motto of ‘God Bless Our Home.’ ” The Home Benefit Life Association Pays its Losses in full. Pe PN we te MRS. LESTER & CRAWFORD. 3 > ve There is nothing more re: RY ; Uy, p) freshing in hot weather than Se . "y o; Iced Tea. But it takes fine Tea to stand the test of Ice. It seems to’bring out the bite terness and objectionable fea tures of poor tea, It is essen tial therefore that the Tea should be PURE. With a market flooded with green teas, all of which are artificially colored, and black teas, the cheaper grades of which are often both colored and adulterated, the difficulty in procuring PURE Tea begins to be understood. Tt was to meet the demand for_an absolutely PURE TEA price that Beech’s Tea was placed before the public. Being the PURE uncolored leaf, it is different you ever used. It is neither &@ green or black, simply natuH ral leaf, that draws a canary color, sweet and of a delig) t ful fragrance.
