The Santa Cruzans have one billed for today in honor of the First Artillery Regiment. Just now I am trying to make up my mind whether to face it like a true soldier who knows no such word a3 fear, or take to the woods and insure my survival. I went to an old-fashioned barbecue once, and although it was several years ago I feel so squeamish under my belt whenever I hear the word or see it in priat that the world loses all its éharm for me. I wonder if a bullshead braaktast is anything like a barbecue? Is it better or is it worse? And if so, how much so is it ? ‘As I am here to get experience and to fit myself for the hardships and privations of real war, I suppose itis my duty to tackle everything presenting itself. Yes, I will take in the bullshead break: fast if I die in the undertaking. If you don-t hear from me again you will know that I fell doing my duty. Our, band, led by C. A. Neale, gavea delightful open air concert last night in front of the Pacific Ocean House, the program follows: March, “College Song,” medley —(Conterno); Overture, ‘‘I Puritani,”’ (Bellini); Descriptive Selection, ‘‘Sunrise in the sierras”—(Thiere); German medley, ‘‘A Night in Berlin” —(Conradi); Picolo solo, “Turtle Dove—(C, A. Neale); waltz, “Gypsy Baron"—(Millocker). Our company leads the Regiment in being as the number of veteran members. -Sergeant D. B. Five gold medals were awarded _to this company thisyear. These figures we something: to be proud of, Of all the encampments I have attended, the food served this year is the best. It is wholesome and carefully selected, clean and well cooked. There is enough variety to it for anybody, The old-timers never tire of talking over the encampment that the Regiment had vt Nevada-City a few years ago, and they are looking forward to the time .when they will go up there again. They say the mountain-people beat the world for hospitality, and thatNevada City 1a3. the finest looking ladies in_the State. Fred Westerfield, of Marysville, one of the successful heirs of the Nevada county suit, tells the Appeal that the lawyers will receive avery small amount of the estate in comparison with the amount that it has been stated they were to get. He seems certain that the Eastern people who wanted to prove that they were the next of kin, will not appeal, and that he . will soon be in possession of a handsome slice of the property. : Fred bears his good fortune bravely, but he will continue to work the same as before, errs How's Your Liver?
