Moments of Life
QUR lives must be measured by
moments. Little things make
up the total of human happiness
or misery. Who lives well to-day
will not look back on lost opportunities. The first essential is a
sound body. Perfect health can
only be maintained by. the -use of
perfect food. Select carefully the
spices and extracts that enter into
your daily nourishment. How shall
you select? Why, select by the
brand. Make careful tests of flavor
and strength, and having reached
a judgment, stand by it.
CHILLING’S BEST Is the highest
value that our experience and

An Aged Man's. Narr ow Escape.
At Pleasant Valley yesterday afternoon
as Theodore Schwartz, the well-known
and venerable farmer, was adjusting a
board to divert some irrigating water
from the Excelsior ditch, he slipped and
fell into the water. He clung for a few
minutes te a timber across the ditch, but
could not get out, His hold then became released when he floated with the
current about one hundred yards when
he managed to grasp sone bushes and
pull himself out upon the bank. “He was
much exhausted and his children shortly
afterward found him while he was endeavoring to get to the house. It was a
narrow escape for the decrepit gentleman,

Santa Cruz, Aug 12, 1891.
Eprror Transcrret—Did you ever
tackle a bullshead breakfast? The Santa
Cruzans have one billed for today in
honor of the First Artillery Regiment.
Just now I am trying to make up my
mind whether to face it like a true soldier
who knows no such word a3 fear, or take
to the woods and insure my survival.
I went to an old-fashioned barbecue
once, and although it was several years
ago I feel so squeamish under my belt
whenever I hear the word or see it in priat
that the world loses all its éharm for me.
I wonder if a bullshead braaktast is anything like a barbecue? Is it better or is
it worse? And if so, how much so is it ?
‘As I am here to get experience and to
fit myself for the hardships and privations of real war, I suppose itis my duty
to tackle everything presenting itself.
Yes, I will take in the bullshead break:
fast if I die in the undertaking. If you
don-t hear from me again you will know
that I fell doing my duty.

AGAINST THE MINERS.
‘Secretary Chandler's Dectalon in” thé
Harnish-Wallace Cane.
Acting Secretary Chandler has rendered a decision in the case of Harnish
against Wallace-on-appeal-from the fad:
ing of the local land officers at Sacramento, which will materiilty~ change the
practice of the departinent ay to agriculfound to be mineral in~character. The
acting Secretary holds that in order to
defeat agricultural entry on the ground of
mineral character of land, it must be
shown that the mineral was known
to exist at the time of — entry,
Heretafore the practice has been to cancel
agricultural entries where mineral was
discovered at any time prior to issuance

How's Your Liver?
A very imnecessery question to ask a
man whose skin and eyeballs are saffron
tinted. Of course his tongue too is furred,
bowels constipated, head bothered with
aches, right rib region plagued with constant uneasy sensations, These you may
take for granted, although he may not
particularize them, because they are
among the invariable accompaniments of
liver tronble. Are they chronic? If so,
you may be sure he does not, a3 he ought
to do, take Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters,
