WEDNESDAY EVE’G,. AUGUST 16. '93,
A Forest Fire,
Monday afternoon about 3 o’clock a terrible fire broke out in the woods on the north
side of Hartung Mountain, near Kentucky
Flat, says the Telegraph. The place is now
owned by the Kohler Bros., of this place.
It was raging fire indeed, for it started on
that part where for 30 years inflammable matter has been accumulating. The. flames
spread very rapidly and it was but a short
while until the whole neighborhood was eut
fighting the fiery fiend. It was by the hardest and most heroic efforts that they succeeded in quenchirg the fire. and then not
until 20 acres of timber and brush had been
‘burned. It was thought that the fire was
entirely out last night but early this morning when Mr. Mulcahey was attending to
his water ditches he discovered a huge
wolumn of smoke issuing from the hill and
he immediately summoned all the aid at
hand and succeeded in stopping a further
destruction of property,

Well Put.
In an interview with a Sacramento paper
Hon, C.:W. Cross said: :
‘I venture to say that had the’ hydraulic‘
miners been allowed to operate during the
past ten years the United States would not
be disturbed as it is and that the silver
question wouldn't present the phase it does
now, for in the past ten years the mines
would have produced $100,000,000 in gold.
I estimate that fer every dollar of this gold
three dollars of silver would have been
spent. The production of this vast amount
ef gold would have necessitated the coinage
of plenty of silver, and the result all around
would have made the financial condition of
this country very much healthier than now,
and, in addition, the circulation would have
