AN OLD, OLD STORY.
A Thing That Frequently Happens
In Newspaper Offices.
This, says the Marysville Appeal, is
the way some merchants argue when
they are asked to encourage their home
paper by running a small advertisement :
“No, I don’t want an advertisement
in the paper. I cannot afford to advertise largely ; my business won't stand it.
As for a small announcement of two or
three inches it wouldn’t be worth a tinker’s malediction. It would be money
thrown away, No one would ever see
it. If I was in a kind of business that
would warrant me in taking a column, it
might pay, but these small cards are
never rexd. I’m sorry, but I guess I’)
have to do without altogether.”
Time rolls on and this same merchant
finds that his name is mixed up in some
little affair which he imagines would not
look well in print. Or it may goncern
some outside matter that he thinks would
jeopardize his trade in a certain locality.
He flies to the newspaper office and asks
that the item in question be suppressed.
This is about the conversation that will
take place ;
Editor—Yes, I believe such an item
was-handed in, but it is only a line or
two; we did not go into details at all.
Merclfant—A line or two, why it. wil!
go all over the country.
Editor—Well, of course I'd like to accommodate you, Mr. Anomaly, and I
will instruct the foreman to run the thing
away down in one corner among the patent medicine locals. And then there is
only a line or two you know.
Merchant—Oh, that won’t make any
difference. Every, one will see it and it
will be known all over the country.
Editor—Surely you are mistaken, my
friend. You objected to patronizing us
10t long ago on the ground that a two or
shree-inch_ advertisement would never be
ioticed, and this is only a line or two.
jood evening. I’m very sorry, but I
zuess I will have to. let the thing go in.

TWO LUCKY MEN.
One Will Make the Tour of Europe
and the Other Takes a Vacation.
Tallant & Co.’s banking house on the
corner of California and Battery streets
recently drew from tha Louisiana State
Lottery’ Company $15,000, being the
one-fortieth share of ticket 14,398, which
in the June drawing drew the grand
prize of $600,000.
An Examiner reporter called yesterday
at the bank to ascertain the name of the
lucky winner, but the paying-teller, who
was all smiles when. the question was
asked, replied :
‘All business of any kind transacted
with this bank is strictly confidential.
Wenever talk about anything we do
here.” iS
And stlll he smiled, and as he smiled
the smile it stronger grew.
This engendered the suspicion that the
paying teller himself was the lucky winner, but further inqtiry elsewhere elicited
the fact that the lucky person was a
young business man on California street,
the father of seven children.
He declined to allow his name to be
used, but said:
“I am going to take my wife and babies
to Paris next week, and we shall do the
tour of Europe. For that purpose I have
set aside $5,000 of my winnings. With
the remaining $10,000 I have paid off my
homestead mortgage of $2,500, leaving
me $7,500 to invest in real estate. This
lucky atrike has placed me beyond the
reach of want. Business was against. me
this year, but now we are happy, thanks
to an investment of one dollar. ~I have
been buying coupons in the Louisiana
State Lottery for the past three years,
and the biggest winning outside of the
present that I ever made.was one of $10.
“T thought that the thing wasn’t conducted on the square, but my wife induced
me to keep up my investment of dollar a
month, and the result -has proved that
am.”
Horace Stevens, Manager of the Sierra
Lumber Company, is another of the lucky
ones whose name has come to light since
the June drawing. He drew the offtfortieth part of the third prize of $100,000.
His share is $2,500.
A reporter called at his office, 320 Sansome street, yesterday, but found that
Mr. Stevens had gone to the mountains
for asix weeks’ vacation.
‘He has been dabbling for a long time
in the Louisiana State Lottery,” said a
friend of. his, ‘and he told me he had
made a small winning in the Louisiana
State Lottery. A small winning? IfI
had it it would put me on my feet.”—

Dyspepsia
Makes many miserable victims every year.
Distress after eating, headache, heartburn,
sour stomach, faintness and capricious appetite are symptoms of this very widespread

tones the stomach, creates an appetite,
promotes healthy digestion, relieves the
headache, and cures dyspepsia.

Elder Flower Cream
S not a cosmetic in the sense in which
that term is arly used, but permanently beautifies. It creates a soft,
smooth, clear velvety skin, and by daily
use gradually makes the complexion several shades whiter.’ It is a constant protection from the effects of sun and wind
and —— sunburn and freckles, and
blackheads will never come while you use
it. It cleahses the face far better thau
soap and water, nourishes and builds up
the skin tissues and thus prevents the formation of wrinkles. It gives the freshness, clearness and smoothness of skin
that you had when a little girl. Ev
