SINGER SEWING MACHINES
At lower rates than ever before for a good machine.
This machine is made after the /atest models of the
Singer Machines, and is a perfect fac-simile in make, ornamentation and appearance. All the parts are made tc
gauge exactly the same as.the Singer, and are constructed
of precisely the same materials.
The Chicago Singer Machine. haye every importan improvement in a /ogse balance wheel so constructed as to
premit winding bobbins without removing the work from
the machine.
The loose talance wheel is actuated by a solid bolt passing through a coliar securely pinned to the shaft outside
of the balance wheel, which bolt is held to position by a
strong spiral spring. When a bobbin is to be wound the
bolt is ;ulled out enough to release the balance wheel,
and turned slightly to the right.or left where it is held by
a stop-pin till the bobbin is filled. When the machine is
liable to be meddled with by children, the bolt can be left
out of the wheel when not in use, so that the machine
cannot b>. operated by the treadle. .

stated. by an English authority.that hundreds
of thousauds of pounds of sloe, ash, and wiilow leaves are annually imported as tea,
which without the coloring process would be
impossible. They report tea as one of the most
notoriously adulterated articles of commerce,
The temptation to make sweepings and bad
tea into a merchantable product with a few
cents’ worth of green coloring matter is too
strong to withstand, aud the worthlesaness of
the trash that often finds its way to this mar
ket labeled “New Crop," “ Best Quality,”
“Green Tea,"' etc., would simply astound the
public if revealed, to say nothing of the unhealthfulness of the Prussian blue, plumbago, gypaum, and the other mineral colors
that are employed.
Black Teas.
The basket and pan-fired Japan teas, as well
&s the China teas that may be included under
the goveral heading of “ black teas,’ get their
color from the firiug or toasting process, but
mineral Goloring ér is also fr ly
used to give a certain desired coiti mercial
appearance. The firing and the coloring, as
in the green teas, largely conceals the identity of the tea. and permits the use of the
very cheapest teas, to argue nothing for the

About the Cast of Teas,
According to the custom-heuse reports, the
amount of tea received at Ban Francisco last
year (1800) was 6,840,187 pounds, aud the value
$966,290, or a fraction over 180. per pownd
The consumer, of which the reader was one,
paid for that 1%c tex all the way from ‘60c to

enormous profits;and there yeu will pr-bably
find the. chief reason why. most, of you pever

have no mask, they are compelled to be absolutely pure and of better quality than the
artificially colored aud manipulated teas.
Hence the margina on them are smaller, and
mauy dealers don't care about haudling them,
