Now that the officers have stopped all
percentage gambling games, the popular
game is old-fashioned draw poker.
The woman who had a tomale factory in
the Tilley building, above the City Hall,
has suspended busiuess and gone back to
Sacramento.
Seme mischievous boys blew the whistle
at the Miners Foundry about 14 o'clock last
night. ‘There was steam enough left in the
beiler for this purpose, and after giving a
short blast they scampered away. If caught
at this trick they will be arrested.
Colfax Sentinel : C. R. Higgins and family have left Applegate for Nevada county,
where Mr. Higgins has charge of Mr. Selfridge’s ranch.
Ore recently shipped to the Selby Smelt—
ing Werks from Grass Valley netted $110
per ton. It came from a claim on the ranch
below Rougli and Ready formerly owned by
Hon. William George.
Enoch Helland of Grass Valley, who had
the beer glass fight with J. Jeffurd, was able
to be out on Thursday last, and called at
the Justice's office in that town and. deposited $10 for disturbing the peace.
The evenings are getting to be remarkably cool just as soon as the sun goes down.
The coel evenings and bright moonlight,
hewever, are very auspicious for lovers to
parade the streets, and there happens to be

A. Saul. The‘ vehicle will decorate the
streets of Nevada City, being the passenger
‘bus that is run in connection with the
Union Hotel of that city, Northway & Bodewig, proprietors. _
The sides of the.’bus stow the work of a
master hand, having a finish in scroll and
paintings taken from the race course.
The striping is of the latest design and
altegether the job is something Mr. Saul
can well feel proud of. The.rig is now in
the trimming ghop of Amos Fisher: who is
upholstering the interior. The Transcript
and a number of Nevada City’s business
men have taken a space in the upper interior
for advertising purposes.

. “fhe other night Berwick and Lyle Hanson, sons of Abe Hanson, formerly of this
city, were going to their home in San Francisce when they were stopped by two foot~
pads. ‘They had no wioney, se the robbers
gave them a clubbing. Berwick’s jaw was
broken in two places and had to be set in
plaster of Paris. While coughing one day,
the plaster cracked and wire stitches had to
be used. Lyle received two black eyes and
a severe beating.

A Prisoner Escapes.
Janitor Ashburn was at work this forenoon mowing the grass at the Court House,
and had a prisoner named Henry Hoffman,
from Truckee, helping him. Hoffman said
he was going out into the jail yard for some
purpose, aud started off. He passed through
the Court House and into the yard, and
scaling the high wall made his escape. He
was seen by somebody as he jumped from
the wall. He is still at large.

A Big Circus Coming.

Tom W. Howard, contracting agent for
the great Sells & Rentfrow Shows, was in
town teday arranging for the appearance of
the shows here on the 4th of September.
Twenty-three flat cars and two stock cars
have been engaged to bring the caravansary
to this city. It will arrive here on Sanday,
the 3d, and exhibit the following day. The
work stock, elephants and. camels will be
brought overland from Marysville. There
are 150 people in the company, and three
bands of music, besides a steam caliope.
There are twenty-six cages ef wild animals.
This is the biggest show that will visit the
Pacific Coast this seaspn, and will be the
first circus and menagerie that has visited
Nevada City in several years,
