converging side hills the pressure will
be less, yetevery pore and interstice
will be filled. Should there-be the
slightest tendency of this watercharged rock to expand, either laterally or vertically, it is easy to understand how even a dam’ in itself well
planned and carefully built may in
time give Way, owing to such ‘expansion,
The sapping and we.kening effects
of water percolating under high pressure may go on for years without being
noticed, but if thg dam erection is ultimately, though it may be imperceptibly, liited or compressed by the slow
swelling ofthe ravine or hillside formations, so that cracks and_veinlets
ed pressure may suddenly destroy it.
Toe wearing or mechanical effects
resulting from-a sweating process going
on ina dam, or the rock underlying
it, is, is not the only evil which is to
be feared. The air acting on wed
which are followed by disintegration
of the affected rocks, and thus slowly
yet surely there may: be destructive
agencies at work where least expected.
Should there be veins of porous
rock dipping under a dam from its upper side, the passage of water through
den cause of disaster, The escape
may be smail at first, but a softening
and widening work going on for years
connot fail to weaken a heavy dam
building not very far above it.
If I am right, continues the author,
in avsuming from reasons stated
ve that the building of dams on
some kinds of stratified rocks renders
them ungafe, I truat by calling attention to the subject to encourage investigation and the adoption’ of
adequate engineering remedies. It
would be some sutisfaciion to know
whether the Johnstown and Walnut
Grove dams were built on stratified
rocks. If they were, affording evidence long before tbey collapsed,
which they did not give when first in
use, that cracks bad ‘been opened in
them, it is reason ble to assume that
they had been injared by the expunsion of the foundation and hillside
rocks. : a

A Letter from an En Eminent Physicinn.
Mr. Eprror; At the risk of indorsing @
proprietary preparation, I have a few words
in favor of a new laxative principle. But
first, how I came to discover it. A patient
asked about taking Joy’s Vegetable Sarsaparilla. As sarsaparilias usually contain
mercury or iodides I objected, and asked for
the formula, which finding purely vegetable,
and so mild as to be to my mind almost
inert, I consented. Imagine my astonishment when perfect laxative action was re
It has two great points. First, being
purely vegetable, it is (unlike mercury) not
‘cumulative in the system, being easily car
ried off by the digestive p jand
it is effective with a less quantity of the
eathartic principle than has hitherto been
atteinable. It in this respect ranks as @
discovery, and approaches the ideal, vis:
