MARVE?.0Us GOLD sosenaitess
ian Territory and
“A Benver letter to the St. Louis
Globe-Democrat says: “For years
rumors of wonderful gold fields in the
Indian Territory have been in circulation among a few of the old-time prospectors of the Weet. Their wealth
4ias been reported so great as to almost
stagger the most excited imagination.
The Indians have, however, 80 closely
guarded these fields thata thorouzh investigation has been utterly impossible
Lieut -nant-Colonel S. Snyder, who
was recently transferred from Oklahcmato Santa Fe, arrived here yesterday,
and duringa conyersation on the mutr said:
wparhan yon lave heard of H le
and Norcross. These men discovered
a rich mine in Nevada, and sold ont
years ago for several hundred thous
and dollars. One day lst winter a
stranger, who had every appearance
ofa prospector, came to me at Oklihoma City and introduced himself as
Hale. He’said he had lost his fortune
and for some time had been prospecting in the Cheyenne country of the
Indian Terditory, north of the R-d
River. He had suffered many harcships, and narrowly excaped with his
life fron the Ch yemnes who guirl
their country inmost careluly ajainet
intrusion In his escape he said he
was forced to leave all the mineral he

The Basin of the Caspian Sea Rests on a

Tiflis is midway on the railway that
cents the Caucasus in its whole width
and puts the two seas in communicasea with that of Bakou onthe Caspian.
As we leave the capital in the latter direction the eye is at first ravished and
then desolated by the changing aspects
of the land. The track follows the Kour,
‘which rolls its broad sheet of water majestically through wild forests and rich
tilled soil, while two chains of snowy
ridges stretch away out of sight in the
distance—the Caucasus to the left, the
mountains of Armenia to the right. 4
' Soon we leave the river, which goes
to join the Araxes toward the south;
the plain gets broader and barer; tall
cages built of plans perched on four tree
trunks rise in the midst of the rice fields
like watch towers. The inhabitants of the
villages, who are all Tartars in this
region, take refuge at night in these
aerial nests: the marshy land is so’ unhealthy that it is dangerous to sleep
there. In spite of these precautions the
pedsants whom we see are devoured by
fever: their emaciated vi remind ns
of those of the inhabitants of the Roman
campagna. After leaving Hadji-Caboul,
the station in Moorish style wherea new
line branches off—*‘the Teheran line,” I
am told by the engineers who are building it, and who hope to carry it into the
very heart of Persia—we enter an African ldndscape, sad and luminous.
REMARKABLE SCENERY. —
‘The mountain chains become lower:
they are, now simply cliffs of gilded sandstone. festooning against a crude blue
sky. At their feet the desert,a sandy
expanse, covered here and there with a.
rose carpet of flowering tamarisks. Herds
of camels browse on these shrubs under
the guard of a half naked shepherd, motionless as a bronze statue. The fantastic silhouettes of these animals are inhad secured. He said that he came . oeased in ize and changed in form by
upon one piece of native gold which
wawso heavy that he could not lift it.
A party of Mexicans is allowed by the
Indians to mine fora short time each
year, and tlen it is claimed the visitors steal quietly away by a roue
known only to themselves. There is
no doubt of one fact, the Indians have
killed many hunters and prospectorwho have succceJed in penetrating
tothe hiils which lie near the Red
River. Few men have even had the
~ “BaRdihood to attempt prospecting in
that region, and of tt:ese Hale. it the
stranger was indeed he, is the only
oman I have*e@ser geen who escaped
alive. = ~*
“TY heard the prospector’s story,
which was told with every appearance
of truth, and ail my qnestions were answered in a yeriectly straightforward
manner ; but as my time was occupied,
and I have lost money at differem
times by fitting out prospector=, I di:
; ot-extend to him the assistance he
esi red for the purpose vu: wean «
new excursion into the country. The
man appeared greatly dissppointed
and left the quarters with a downcas!
head. Ihave never seen him since.”
‘The same story was told the Globe
Democrat. corre-pondent recen ly by »
man from Wichita, who said: ‘*The
time is not ripe yet forthe public tc
be informed on the subject, but there
are gold depos:tein the hills and valleys near the Red River whi h are
richer than auything now known in the
world. Imet huntersand prospectorr
who have been on the spot and whos
stories were so startling as to seem like
an Eastern fable. I will tell you one
thing, however, ‘a big syndicate oi
leading politicians and capitalists ha:
been formed, and next fall a strorg
party is to be started fur the guld field
to learn the truth concerning the
mines. ‘The party has already bee:
enlisted and is backed by such men
.as Senator Ingalls and Senator Plumb.
