fr nbamananernary macaosoeusen aed — seettethcetedettes eens GHE GRANSGRIP. TUESDAY EVE’G, AUGUST aa, '93. = BAD FOR OUR FRUIT MEN. a The Immense Crop of Bartlelt Pears and Apples Will Go to Waste. a Elijah Booth, who has in years past acted as fruit-purchasing agent iu this section for the Sacramente commission merchants, went %o that place a few days age to interview these merchants about buying the crop around here this year. Mr. Booth has returned and brings very discouraging news te the fruit men. On acceunt of the low prices and the stringency of the money anarket East the Sacramente merchants will amet buy any fruit here this year, and are very loth to take any even om commission, Last season the merchants there paid to the fruit men in this county upwards 6f $10,000, and this year there will be more than double the amount of fruit raised — there will-be ne market for it. ‘ Mr. Booth was not satisfied with awe eouraging reports given him by the Bacra* mento merchants, and finally had an interview with>the eannery men at that place. They also infermed him that em account ef the stringency of the money market they would put up but little fruit thie year. “ Mr. Boeth then went to Marysville to see what could be done with the carnery men . there, and was niet with the same auswer. Thus it will be seen that notwithstanding we will havethe largest and best crop ef pears, peaches, plums and apples ever raised here, the bulk ef it will have to go to waste, as it will not pay Chinese wages to pick it. tMucklen’s Arnica Salve. There résides not far from Nevada City a gentleman who owns ene of the finest pianos -. im this part of"tife State. That piano has not been used for a very long time, and upon an examitfation of it a few days ago the discovery was made that rats had played sad havoc with the instrument. The different colors of felt had been literally bitten off and the pieces carried away, damaging the piano to the extent of about $25 or $30. \ A rat nest was accidentally discovered, by the owner of the piano, made of this felt. He had an eye for the beautiful and lovely things that his daughter had often worked into ornamental pieces, and at first thought that it was her work. He forgot all about the great damage done to the piano on seeing this gay looking rat nest made from the felt from his instrument. It could not have been more artistically arranged had it been done by liuman hands. At the bottom of -the nest, néatly woven all around, was the blue felt, placed in that particular place where there was the rost likelihood of it being soiled. Next came a layer of red, most artistically arranged around the entire nest, and the next and tcp layer was of white. No person could have arranged it so neatly and exquisitely as did these Ne~ vada county rats. The owner of the nest has been urged to place it in the Pavilion at Grass Valley, but has not decided. what to do with it, as he prizes it very highly. Oe THE nineteen-months-old child ef U. 5. G. She was found dead in the yard near the house, a pistol with two empty chambers lying on the ground near her. She was shot through the head. It was theught by some that she had committed suicide, but the fact of her face not being powder marked was not fa— vorable to this theory. A bullet hole was found in the side of the heuse and one in the bed of ‘a wagon in the yard, showing that three bullets had been fired, while the pistol had only two empty chambers. The girl had been brought home from Sau Francisco a short time previous, and a young man had followed her and urged her to return to the city with him, but she_refused to do so. He maile threaty against her life‘and it was believed that he carried out his threats. Stewart is the man suspected of the crime, He says he is willing to come back, as he is innocent, The officers say there is np evidence of any consequence against him and that he will probably be allowed t) remain where he is, 0-0 e-+ For ovnstipation,*biliousness and kidney affections take Simmons.
